CSU HEAD COACH Ryun Williams QUOTES
(opening statement)
“Nice win. You saw two competitive teams out there. Very physical basketball game and our kids made some really tough plays out there, not just shots, but we handled the ball, rebounded well, guarded well, we kept our composure. (I’m) really proud of this victory.”
(scoring drought in second half)
“That was a tough stretch, Victoria (Wells) got to the foul line and made two big free throws and then Ellen (Nystrom) got a drive, then we got a little more separation. We were a couple of shots away from blowing that thing open in the first half. Jamie (Patrick) had two really good looks from three, so did Hanne (Mestdagh), so did Gritt (Ryder). I think we missed a bunny inside, we just really felt like we could’ve stepped on them early, but (we) didn’t take advantage. Fresno (State) is going to crawl back. That’s a tough team right there. But we kept our composure and made enough plays, shot the free throw ball really well, 21-of-22, wow.”
(on overall effort by the Rams)
“There was good emotion out there tonight, we had more of it. I was trying to get our kids even more excited and really try to get them out of here. But it was very good execution, the kids worked well, they concentrated on the defensive end. They did what they were supposed to do. They did their job, good win.”
(on Nystrom’s career night)
“Ellen was awesome, I loved her mentality from the get go. When she is patient, and she makes good decisions with her shot selection, she is really good. Career high tonight, rebounds well. We have been waiting for this to happen with Ellen, and this game can really jump start a good stretch run for her.”
(on beating the best team in the Mountain West)
“Our kids know. They went out and did what they thought they should do. They thought they should beat Fresno and they did. We will come to practice tomorrow and get ready to try and beat Air Force. We are getting better. We are a good basketball team. Fresno has been at the top of our league for a long time. They have a habit of winning, and anytime you can beat a team or program like that, it has to feel good and (you) gain some confidence from that.”
CSU PLAYER QUOTES
(on tonight’s win)
“It feels great. We just did it. It was a good team effort and everybody stepped up. We played good defense and rebounded well.”
(on Fresno State’s guards)
“We just didn’t let them stress us out. We stayed calm, made the right pass, they had to run and they got tired.”
(on last year’s loss against Fresno State)
“I feel like it’s a good thing because now we just want to (figuratively) punch them. It’s good motivation.
(on 21 points)
“They had a lot of pressure on our guards. They pressured them and denied them, so me and (Elin Gustavsson) had a lot of room to do our stuff and drive the ball. It felt good.”
(on tonight’s win)
“Before the game in the locker room and even the two days that we’ve been practicing everything has felt so good. The energy has been really good and I feel like that is one of the keys to win.”
(on focus throughout the game)
“I felt like we just found each other and before we passed the ball we just thought about if we could pass it. We played smart; it wasn’t that we just wanted to get rid of the ball because of the pressure. Yeah, we’re going to win but at the same time we’re going to show that we’re the better team. It’s not just a win. We’re going to prove that we’re so much better and I felt like we did. It was fun to play”
(on last year’s loss against Fresno State)
“You can’t think about that during the season, but when we’re going to play against them then we can bring it up and use that energy. I feel like we did that.”
(on tough mentality)
“I think that’s going to be one of the keys in the tournament. It’s going to be who the tougher team is. We’re just trying to build that up and we’re going in the right direction.”
