FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State women’s tennis clinched a come-from-behind victory of 4-3 Thursday afternoon. Defeating the Seattle University Redhawks (3-8), Colorado State (2-5) has now won two of three matches at home this season.

The Rams secured the doubles point in the match after winning both the No. 1 and No. 2 pairs. Colorado States No. 1 pair Natalie Heffron/Adriana Wojakowska won (6-4) after being in a close matchup. The No. 2 duo of Mollie Cooper/Maddie Buxton defeated the Redhawks (6-3) after getting down early. The No.3 pair for the Rams Laia Hernandez Soler/Madison Porter did not finish their match (6-5) due to the doubles point being awarded to Colorado State.

“They played solid” Colorado State Rams Head Coach Jon Messick said. “We got behind on the No. 2 doubles court, and No. 1 was close the whole time but the girls remained focused the entire time.

Colorado State lost the first three singles matches, but pulled out a victory when it won the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles matches. The Rams’ No. 1 singles player Heffron was defeated (6-2, 6-3), while No. 2 Wojakowska was defeated (7-5, 6-2, 6-4) in a close three set match. No. 3 Hernandez Soler was defeated (6-3, 6-2), which gave the Redhawks the lead 3-1 in the match.

“It was tough that we got down 3-1 after losing 1-2-3 singles, and as a team that’s tough because three matches had not even started yet. The credit goes to the team depth, at 4-5-6 we were able to close the match out even when we fell behind” Messick said.

Colorado State was able to come back after No. 4 singles player Buxton, No. 5 singles player Cooper, and No. 6 singles player Porter each grabbed straight set victories. Buxton defeated her opponent (6-2, 7-5), Cooper won (6-1, 6-1), and in the match clinching victory, Porter won (6-2, 7-5).

Porter returned to action for Colorado State versus Seattle University after sitting out due to illness. Porter helped the Rams grab the No. 2 doubles victory, and then was able to win the last singles match for Colorado State’s victory.

“She came out and was really competitive, without having the playing time I thought she was very significant. She competed and fought hard and it came at a critical time,” Messick noted.
