HEAD COACH Ryun Williams
(opening statement)
“Good basketball game. Wyoming is always hard to beat. They’re always hard to beat. Those are great coaches on that bench, a very prideful group of ladies, so this is a great win for us just because of who we beat.”
(on responding after Fresno State loss)
“Our kids have always responded, and we knew they were going to respond, not necessarily with a victory but with a really good effort, good execution, really locked in and focused. And usually when we do that, we are pretty tough to beat, so I’m proud of the fact that we did respond after that tough Fresno (State) loss. We’ve got eight games left in the conference season, and every single one of them you have to play with great urgency and concentration and we did that tonight.”
(on the first timeout and then going on a 21-2 run)
“We didn’t have to say much. We had that timeout to regroup a little bit and change a few matchups and readjust for (Jordan) Kelley. Kelley had a great game for Wyoming. We probably were a little too far off of her to start the game. She drove it, shot the three, so we needed to tighten up. I thought Emilie’s (Hesseldal) three was really big early on, and her shot jumpers were big early on. She had a really good basketball game and she got us going I think we went on a (21-2) run. Once our kids got locked in, that was some good basketball.”
(on balanced scoring)
“There were some really good moments out there when we ran some really good motion because we put five kids that can score out there with versatility, that’s the key. If you don’t have a versatile game, Wyoming knows that. They won’t guard you, that sort of thing. I thought that group was really good. Our balance has always been strength of ours. It’s nice to see four kids in double figures. Our bench was really good tonight, Jamie (Patrick) came in there and made some big free throws and Alana (Arias) had a nice first half, so it was nice to see those contributions.”
(on sweeping Wyoming)
“The Border War is a big deal. We make it a big deal to our kids. It’s a big deal to our fans, so to get two wins, that feels good, but also when you can sweep a really good basketball team, that says something. So it’s not just Wyoming. They are very difficult to beat and this feels good.”
CSU PLAYERS
(on overview of game)
“It just makes it more fun because we know that they’re mad. We know that they have had something against us for years. I think we were just ready to come out and play. They came out really hard and we were down a lot for the beginning of the game, but we calmed down and got back into the flow of what we had to do.”
(on timeout after 10-point deficit)
“(Ryun Williams) was just like ‘you guys need to get it together.’ We were really prepared for them. We know what Kayla (Woodward) likes to do. I think we stopped her pretty well, she only had seven. Marquelle (Dent) likes to get in there, throw some stuff up and get to the free-throw line. We knew what they wanted to do, so I think he was just frustrated that we weren’t doing what we needed to do. So he got on us and it worked.”
(on defending Kaitlyn Mileto)
“I like to shoot so I know what people don’t like. The closer you’re on them and you’re stuck on them all game, it’s irritating. She was frustrated the whole time because I was literally on her the whole entire time. Just knowing that any space she would’ve made a three, but I’m happy she only made two.”
(on upcoming games)
“We need to remain second. Just because we didn’t win against Fresno (State) doesn’t mean we have to drop off and wait until the conference tournament. They still have to win and we need to keep ourselves in position to try and win the Mountain West.”
“Taking it one game at a time, that has been our philosophy for the past two years. Once we finish one game we’ll start worrying about the next and treating every opponent like they can win because they can win.”
(on Moby crowd)
“I hear them. It’s nice to know that they care so much and our fans know when we mess up because they really watch us play. It’s nice to know that when we’re here there’s a support system no matter what.”
(on overview of game)
“Every game is so similar; we’re up after first half and then (in the) second half they come out. This game we just managed to not let them come out with that much.”
(on defensive stops)
“We all have more team chemistry working together so it’s not just a one on one where AJ (Newton) has to stop them or somebody has to stop Woodward. We’re helping each other out and reading each other better of when we can help and when we have to stay. So I think that helped.”
(on sense of urgency)
“It says a lot about the team and how we respond after a loss. It was not only a Border War and a sweep, that is what it is, but it was a great win for us after the Fresno (State) loss because that hurt and we really wanted that win.”
(on performance)
“It felt great, but it’s a win. Whatever it takes and I don’t think it’s about my percentage shooting, but of course it’s fun. It’s fun to play when you score.”
