Tennis Preview: Rams to play three matches this weekend

Match Notes and Stats

THIS WEEK
The Rams return to play on Friday, April 17 when they visit in-state foe Northern Colorado, before travel on Saturday, April 18 to Laramie, Wyo., to take on the Cowgirls. Colorado State saw action against the UNC Bears during the fall season when they hosted the Colorado State Invitational, and then again when the team ventured down to the Air Force Invitational.

The Bears (7-14), are coming off a win-loss split last weekend where they defeated Idaho State (6-1) and then were defeated by Weber State in a 4-3 decision. The Bears enter the contest 3-8 in conference play, while winning compiling a 4-6 record in Greeley.

CSU will then pay a visit to Mountain West rival Wyoming, who is on a seven-match winning streak after defeating the Air Force Falcons last week. The Cowgirls (12-5), are 4-0 in conference play and also saw fall action against the Rams at the Air Force Invitational. The Cowgirls have three players with double digit wins this season. Magdalena Stencel has 10 wins at the No.1 singles position, Christa Gecheva has 11 overall wins, with nine coming at the No. 6 singles position, and Silviya Zhelyazkova has 11 total wins with five in the No. 5 singles spot. Wyoming's Dorottya Jonas and Zhelyazkova come into the match against the Rams with the most doubles victories (13), notching 10 of the wins at the No. 3 doubles spot.

The weekend's action concludes with a home match on Sunday morning against South Dakota. Sunday will be senior day, where the Rams will honor Natalie Heffron and Adriana Wojakowska. The Coyotes enter the weekend with a 7-8 record, and are led by  Yuliya Sidenko, who has posted a 14-1 record this spring.

LAST TIME OUT
Colorado State is coming off of a win-loss split last weekend where they were defeated by Air Force 6-1. The Rams' Celine Voss notched the lone victory for the Rams in a straight-set victory in the No.5 singles spot.

The Rams earned an impressive victory against No.54 New Mexico, 4-3, last Sunday, CSU notched the best victory of Coach Messick's career. The
Rams snagged the doubles point, and then three singles matches in order to claim victory.

STRONG SEASON
The Rams have won seven matches this spring, the most in a single season since 2011 when the Rams won nine matches... Also performing well is CSU's No. 1 doubles team of Natalie Heffron and Adriana Wojakowska. The senior duo has won 10 matches, the most since 2007 when Emily Kirchem and Hilary Tyler won 17, also competing at the No. 1 doubles spot.
