FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State had a terrific start to its 2015-16 season on Monday, shooting a 580 through two rounds of the Colonel Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic. The score is two over par, and tied for second in the 17-team tournament. The final round will be played Tuesday morning, with a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m.
“They look good to me,” third-year coach Annie Young said. “As a coach, it’s exciting to see a team ready to play this early in the season. I’m excited for tomorrow. I think they’ll play well.”
Long Beach State has a two-stroke lead (578), followed by CSU and BYU at 580 apiece.
Junior Elisabeth Rau leads the Rams, shooting 2-under for the day (71, 71). Sophomore Sarah Archuleta tied a career-best with a 3-under 69 during the second round and sits at even entering Tuesday’s action. Newcomers Katrina Prendergast and Brianna Becker also made noise. Prendergast shot a 2-under 70 on the first round, while Becker shot par on the second.
“We’re deeper this year, for sure,” Young said. “Last year we only had six players second semester, and it’s hard to be competitive when you only have six. You look at Mikayla (Tatman) who’s playing as the individual, and she’s right in the mix at three over. Competition will make us better.”
Among the 90 competitors, Rau is tied for second, one stroke back from the leader (Amanda Myers of Northern Colorado). Archuleta is tied for 10th, making CSU one of two schools in the tournament to have two top-10 individuals. As a team, CSU had 10 birdies and a tournament-most 67 pars on Monday.
CSU is looking for its first team championship in its home tournament since 2004, and first individual winner since the inaugural tournament in 2001. Live scoring will be available online.
“We don’t talk about winning too much, it’s just sticking to the process and a good game plan,” Young said. “They know it’s going to creep into their heads, but the exciting thing is that we’re in the mix.”
