Rams cap homecoming weekend with 2-0 victory over Utah State

10/15/2017 5:53:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Karli Eheart and Hannah Gerdin score for the Rams in shutout victory

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – A complete 90-minute effort on each side of the pitch propelled the Colorado State women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the visiting Utah State Aggies on Sunday afternoon from the new CSU Soccer Field.

Colorado State's (4-7-5, 2-3-3 MW), which played its annual Pink Out match on Sunday, got its goals from Hannah Gerdin in the 35th minute and Karli Eheart in the 63rd minute. CSU stifled Utah State's offense for the duration of the match, never allowing the Aggies a particularly dangerous chance in the Rams' second conference victory of the season.

Gerdin, CSU's all-time career points leader, opened the scoring on a header to the 35th minute. Beth Plentl played a deep cross from about 40 yards out to the back post for Gerdin, who headed the ball into the lower left of the net to give the Rams a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Eheart scored her third goal of the season to extend the Rams' lead to 2-0 on a one-touch shot past Aggie keeper Sara Cobb. Plentl picked up her second assist of the match on a corner kick, as she served the ball to Eheart on a hard and low line drive into the box. Eheart gained possession of the ball, crossed in front of a Utah State defender and angled the ball into the back-right corner of the net.

CSU goalkeeper Hunter Peifer made three saves en route to her fourth solo shutout of the season. Bailyn Furrow, Halley Havlicek, Alex Lanning, Caeley Lordemann, Beth Plentl and Janelle Stone each played all 90 minutes. In her 90 minutes, Lanning had a team-high two shots on goal.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
"That was a long time coming right there. We deserved to win that game and we played pretty well. Defensively, we did very well against some good attacking players. They (Utah State) switched the ball and played wide and all I saw was a wave of pink jerseys (CSU's Pink Out was Sunday) coming across and they weren't going to let them in. That was good to see for us."

On Hannah Gerdin's goal in the first half
"The good news is that Hannah wants to be in on everything. She is really good at one thing and that's being a nuisance in front of the goal. As soon as I saw Hannah get to the back post on that play, at that point all it takes is a good serve. Obviously, it was a good serve and she (Gerdin) was on the end of it. She's standing right there and nods it in. We've seen us miss those before and that's a good sign for us."

NOTES
- Colorado State's win over Utah State was its first over the Aggies in the program's now-five-season history.
- Beth Plentl's two-assist performance was the second in the history of CSU soccer. Makenzi Taylor had the other this season against North Dakota State (Sept. 10).
- Karli Eheart is now tied with Ally Murphy-Pauletto and Makenzi Taylor for the team points lead (seven).
- Eheart is also now tied with Murphy-Pauletto for the team goals lead (three).
