Brady registers second double-double of the season on 19 points and 14 rebounds
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State junior forward Annie Brady scored a team-high 19 points and added 14 rebounds to lead the Rams past the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers, 71-59, on Monday night from Moby Arena.
Â
Brady shot 9-for-18 (.500) from the floor and corralled half of her 14 rebounds on the offensive glass en route to her second double-double in a CSU uniform. Senior guard Stine Austgulen recorded her first double-double of the season, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Grace Colaivalu joined each in double-figure scoring with 16 points and added a team-high five assists.
Â
Although Colorado State (7-3) never trailed at the end of any of the four quarters, the Rams and Lady Panthers (2-8) were locked in a back-and-forth game for the majority of the contest. The lead changed hands 15 times throughout the contest, with the final two lead changes coming in the last eight minutes. The Rams led, 49-46, entering that final quarter, but PVAMU leading scorer Shala Dobbins scored five points within the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to whittle the edge to 53-51 at the 8:07 mark. Dobbins then set up Talisha Presley's three-pointer, as the Lady Panthers pulled ahead, 54-53, with 7:34 to play.
Â
However, Colaivalu drew a shooting foul on the other end and made both free throws less than 20 seconds later to put the Rams ahead for good. CSU allowed the Lady Panthers just one more field goal the rest of the way, a Jordyn Penniman three-pointer to cut the Rams' lead to 60-57 with 5:03 remaining. The Rams pulled away from there, allowing only two more points on PVAMU free throws before the final 71-59 result.
Â
Brady pulled in eight rebounds and scored 11 points in the second half, including seven in the fourth quarter. Colaivalu also scored double-digit points (10) in the second half alone, as the Rams finished the latter half of the game with a .517 field goal percentage (.433 through regulation). Prairie View A&M's Dobbins led all scorers with 21 points.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
With its win on Monday, the Colorado State women's basketball team matches its second-best start under sixth-year head coach Ryun Williams. The only Williams-coached CSU team with a better record through 10 games was in 2015-16, when the Rams started 9-1. That team finished 31-2, setting a program record for win percentage (.939). The other teams to start 7-3 went on to go 25-8 (2013-14, Mountain West regular season champions) and 23-8 (2014-15, MW regular-season champions).
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"I thought once we got the rust knocked off a little bit that we did a lot of good things there in that second half. We also made a lot of mistakes, careless mistakes, that got exposed against a team that I thought - Prairie View A&M - was awesome tonight. Their quickness bothered us and they shot the ball a lot better than they've been shooting it all year. A lot of it had to do with that they were playing well, as well. When it became winning time, I liked how we made some plays, a lot of winning plays. We made some big shots and got some separation and closed it out. We had a little bit of everything in that game: good, bad, careless, strong."
Â
Junior forward Annie Brady
On how their approach changed throughout the game
"It doesn't matter who you're sizing up against, you just have to try and beat them on the board. We turned it up a little bit and started guarding them a little bit better in that corner where they were getting some shots."
Â
Freshman guard Grace Colaivalu
On the importance of ball security:
"I think it's not just this game that ball security matters, I think it's every single game. That's one area where our basketball team needs to come together and get stronger in."
Â
NOTES
- Annie Brady's first double-double of the season came in the Rams' win over Gonzaga on Nov. 13. Brady had 11 points and 15 rebounds off the bench in that game.
- Monday night also marked the second time that two Rams have had double-doubles in a single game. Brady (11 points, 15 rebounds) and Hannah Tvrdy (10 points, 10 rebounds) combined for that feat against Gonzaga on Nov. 13.
- Stine Austgulen's 10 rebounds are a new career high. Her previous best was eight (twice), most recently at New Mexico on Jan. 14, 2017.
- Grace Colaivalu's 16 points mark a new season/career high. Previously, her best was 13 (twice), most recently against Colorado (Dec. 6).
- The Rams have won three of their last four home contests.
