LUBBOCK, Texas - Katrina Prendergast, who is representing the Rams as an individual at NCAA Regionals, opened up play on Monday with a 2-over 74. The score is tied for 16th place among 96 total golfers. Play will continue Tuesday and Wednesday with Rounds 2 and 3, respectively.
"KP played very well today," head coach Annie Young said. "The wind was blowing 20-30 miles per hour all day, which presented a challenge. I thought she did a great job throughout the day of keeping her emotions in check. It was good to see her finish her last nine holes under par."
Prendergast is one of six individuals selected to the Lubbock Regional, joining Alivia Brown (Washington State), Lois Kaye Go (Boston College), Malene Krolboll Hansen (Coastal Carolina), Jakeishya Le (UC Riverside) and Caroline Nistrup (LSU). Among them, Nistrup is at even-par 72 and Kaye Go is at 1-over. Prendergast is two strokes ahead of Brown and Knoboll Hansen and three strokes better than Le so far.
The six individuals are competing against teams from Arizona State, BYU, Furman, Georgetown, Iowa State, Kent State, Murray State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, Richmond, Sacred Heart, San Diego State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, UCLA and UNLV. From each of the four regional sites, the low six teams and the low three individuals not on those teams (for a total of 24 teams and 12 individuals) will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 19-24, in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Beginning on Hole 10, Prendergast bogeyed the Par 3 to start the day. She had six pars and three bogeys on the back nine to reach the midway point of the round at 3-over. She then moved to the front nine and birdied her second hole. She would also birdie Hole 7, a Par 4, and finished the front half at 1-under.
CSU's standout sophomore is competing at NCAA Regionals for the second consecutive season. A year ago, as a true freshman, she finished in the upper third of the field. Already the holder of several school records, Prendergast is a two-time All-Mountain West golfer whose current season stroke average is on pace to finish third in school history.
