Rams fall in extra time at Kansas State, 3-2

9/17/2017 6:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Rams recovered from a 2-0 deficit to force extra time

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Despite erasing a 2-0 deficit, the Colorado State women's soccer team fell to the Kansas State Wildcats, 3-2, in extra time on Sunday from the K-State Soccer Complex.

Colorado State (2-4-2) allowed two goals in the first 31 minutes of action, but held the Wildcats off the board for the remainder of regulation and netted two goals before the full 90 minutes was up. After giving up that second goal, the Rams responded five minutes later with a goal on a penalty kick, which was awarded when Kaija Ornes was fouled while attempting a shot in the penalty area. Midfielder Beth Plentl took the penalty kick for the Rams, and beat the keeper to the lower left to cut the Wildcats' lead in half.

Trailing 2-1 after the first 45 minutes, Colorado State applied increased pressure on the Wildcats' back line in the second half. The Rams had three shots in the first five minutes of action after half, and sustained that effort before scoring the equalizer in the 65th minute. From the top of the 18-yard box, CSU forward Hannah Gerdin passed the ball down to senior Maddi Rodriguez, who was one-on-one with the K-State keeper. Rodriguez fired low across the net and beat the keeper to the right side to tie the match up at 2-2.

K-State's Brookelynn Entz scored her team-leading third goal and the game winner in the 95th minute. After a throw-in from the right side, the ball was passed into the box where Entz found space and shot the ball to the top-right corner for the deciding tally. Maddie Souder and Katie Cramer scored the first two goals for the Wildcats in the 17th and 31st minutes, respectively.

CSU goalkeeper Hunter Peifer made six saves over the full 95 minutes of action. The Rams finished the afternoon with 13 shots, including seven shots on goal. Ally Murphy-Pauletto had a team-high three shots (two shots on goal), while each of Ornes, Rodriguez and Alyssa Yoshida each finished with two shots.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
On the team's performance
"We played pretty wel for stretches of the game. Their front three gave our defense fits all day long. We managed to fight our way back into the game yet did not have enough to finish the job."
