Rams fall on late New Hampshire goal, 2-1

9/3/2017 5:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Halley Havlicek scores her first career goal in the 75th minute

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – A go-ahead goal by New Hampshire one minute after Colorado State's Halley Havlicek scored her first career tally proved to be the difference in a 2-1 setback for the Rams on Sunday afternoon from the new CSU Soccer Field.

Trailing 1-0 in the 75th minute of play, the Rams earned the corner opportunity that would result in the game-tying tally. The ball was played into the box and headed down to the ground by junior midfielder Maddi Rodriguez before rolling to Havlicek at the top of the 18-yard box. The sophomore defender collected the ball, squared it up and fired it into the left side of the net to tie the match.

After the restart, New Hampshire dribbled the ball down the left side of the pitch before finding forward Kaylan Williams in the middle. Despite pressure from the CSU defense, Williams was able to dribble the ball into the 18-yard box and fire the eventual game-winner into the upper left of the net.

Following a scoreless first half, the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead on a goal from UNH leading scorer Brooke Murphy in the 56th minute. Murphy drove into the left side of the box and ripped a shot that bounced off the middle-left section of the crossbar and into the net.

CSU outshot UNH, 10-8, including a 10-4 advantage over the final 60 minutes. Hannah Gerdin led the Rams with three shots, while each of Karli Eheart and Ally Murphy-Pauletto had two. Five Rams played all 90 minutes on Sunday afternoon, including Havlicek, Taylor Hodgson, Caeley Lordemann and Beth Plentl. CSU goalkeeper Hunter Peifer made one save for the Rams over the full 90 minutes.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
"The finer things of the game come back to haunt us in the most challenging moments of the game. When we are on the field it's a touch here or a touch there - that's the game – you're a foot away, an inch away. You ask me about effort and that's never been an issue with our team, it's the finer points. Having composure in front of goal, the shooting wildly, when you should probably have a better idea."

On the corner kick that led to the Rams' goal:
"We've done pretty well off of set pieces so far this year. Halley (Havlicek) was in the right place. She was where she was supposed to be. It's one of those moments where the ball actually bounced to us - as opposed to three feet away - and she nailed it. She had enough about her from a composure standpoint to stick it."

Colorado State sophomore defender Halley Havlicek
On the team's performance:
"I think we fought hard, but it was tough under the conditions for both teams. We have to put our chances away when we have them and we have to stay tight in back (line). We had some slip-ups."

On her goal in the 75th minute:
"We had a set play for corners but we just end up going for it. The ball went in (to the 18-yard box), and came back out. I saw it, lined up and wanted to strike it with everything I had. It feels amazing (her first career goal). I have been waiting for this forever. On defense we don't get many opportunities but it was nice to put one away."

NOTES
- Of the Rams' seven goals this season, six have been scored by freshman or sophomores.
- CSU junior midfielder Maddi Rodriguez recorded her first point of the season with her assist in the 75th minute.
- Ally Murphy-Pauletto tallied two shots, including one on net. The freshman continues to lead the team in shots (nine) and shots on goal (six).
