Rams battle SIUE to scoreless draw behind Peifer’s program-record 11 saves

Peifer makes CSU-record 11 saves over 110 minutes for the shutout

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Colorado State goalkeeper Hunter Peifer made a program-record 11 saves as the Rams battled the SIU Edwardsville Cougars to a scoreless draw on Friday night from Korte Stadium.

Peifer made four saves in the first half, followed by five stops in the second half and a pair in the first period of extra time. The redshirt sophomore made her biggest impact in the late stages of the second half, denying the Cougars (2-3-1) three times in the final 12 minutes of regulation. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native turned aside a point-blank opportunity from MacKenzie Litzsinger in the 78th minute before coming out of the goal area in the 82nd minute to deny Myah Diekema as well as Litzsinger immediately after.

Despite the scoreless draw, CSU (1-3-2) was able to generate chances throughout the contest. One of the Rams' top chances of the first half came in the 39th minute, when Taylor Steinke fired just wide of the top far corner of the SIUE goal from 18 yards away. Steinke, who entered the match in the 29th minute, added a shot on goal in the final minute of the half on a header from about 18 yards away.

Like the first half, the top chances for both teams in the second half came in the final 15 minutes. The Rams produced the first in the 77th minute, as Lordemann sent a cross just out of the reach of a charging Hannah Gerdin at the far post. Eight minutes later, Karli Eheart created the what was possibly the top opportunity for the Rams on Friday. After the ball was played to her inside the 18-yard box, Eheart dribbled in between two SIUE defenders and was one-on-one with Cougar goalkeeper Juli Rossi. However, Rossi made the save from about six yards out and the match went to extra time.

The Rams had the two final chances by either team, each coming in the second extra time period. The Rams' top late chance came in the 104th minute, as a corner kick service from Beth Plentl found Lordemann at the edge of the goal area. However, SIUE's Rossi was able to reach over to her right and make the stop on Lordemann's shot on goal. The Rams had one more shot on goal on a Halley Havlicek redirect in the final minute, but Rossi made the save and the score went final at 0-0.

Gerdin and Steinke each finished with three shots, including two on goal for Gerdin and one on goal for Steinke. Each of Eheart, Havlicek, Lordemann and Makenzi Taylor recorded a pair of shots with one on goal each. Ally Murphy-Pauletto accounted for the Rams' remaining shot on goal. Havlicek and Plentl each played the full 110 minutes.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State Head coach Bill Hempen
"It was a good battle. We were playing on a different surface than we're used to, and it took us some time to get in a rhythm. The game had ebbs and flows like most soccer games do – we're in their end, they're in our end – but we had some really, really good quality chances that we just weren't able to finish. In that overtime, it looked like we had a chance that looked like it was going to be the one, but their keeper made a great save. Overall, I'm happy for our kids. We're still in that phase of just trying to find our way, and it helps to know that we probably could have won."

On Hunter Peifer's three saves at the end of regulation and her overall performance:
"There was a flurry late there where they (SIUE) were on us pretty good (78th, 82nd minutes), no doubt about it. We needed some security in there late, and she showed the fearlessness that you have to have as a goalkeeper. She had just enough about her tonight to keep SIUE at bay."

NOTES
- Hunter Peifer's 11-save effort is the third individual performance of 10 saves or more in CSU soccer's five-year history.
- Taylor Steinke set a new career high with three shots on Friday.
- Caeley Lordemann's two-shot night on Friday marked her first match with multiple shots at CSU.
- Lordemann's shot on goal in the 104th minute was her first shot on goal at CSU.
- Karli Eheart recorded her first collegiate shot on goal in the 86th minute on Friday.
- Halley Havlicek recorded multiple shots in a match for the first time as a member of the CSU soccer team.
- Havlicek played 110 minutes on Friday, her third match with 110 minutes played at CSU.
