Rams hold off Air Force in Wednesday night road contest, 40-39

1/17/2018 10:17:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Rams paced by freshman center Liah Davis, who scored 11 points and corralled eight rebounds in her first career start

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Colorado State women's basketball team held off the Air Force Falcons in a 40-39 win on Wednesday night in Mountain West action at Clune Arena.

Colorado State (12-6, 4-3 MW) was paced by freshman center Liah Davis, who matched her career/season high with 11 points and added a career/season-best eight rebounds. Freshman guard Grace Colaivalu tallied nine points, while senior guards Stine Austgulen and Hannah Tvrdy scored five points apiece.

With the exception of a 12-point CSU lead early in the second quarter, the score on Wednesday night remained close nearly throughout. The Rams led by five at 34-29 entering the final quarter, but mustered only one field goal in the first 5:50 of the fourth quarter as the lead was whittled eventually to one point. That shot was made by Austgulen at the 9:08 mark, but was preceded by a three by Air Force's Emily Conroe at the 9:31 mark and followed by a Cortney Porter jumper that made it 36-34 game with 4:52 to play.

Tvrdy broke that CSU scoring drought on a fastbreak layup with 4:10 to go, but Air Force's Conroe responded just 17 seconds later with a three to cut the lead back down to one at 38-37. On the Rams' next possession, Colaivalu converted on a midrange jumper to make it 40-37, but the Rams missed their final two shots of the game and did not score for the final 3:21. Over that span, Air Force collected three offensive rebounds, including one that led to a Cortney Porter layup with 47 seconds left.

CSU called a timeout following that basket, and ran the clock all the way down to 17 seconds on the ensuing possession. However, the Rams turned it back over, leaving the door open for Air Force in the final seconds. On that final possession, the Falcons' Porter drove to her right and attempted a layup that went off the right iron. The ball caromed from there into a scrum of CSU and Air Force players, but the ball squirted out to Austgulen as she secured the rebound and the Rams made the final stop needed to escape with the win.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"Coming into this game tonight, we knew that Air Force had played close games against a lot of their opposition and we knew that they would guard us well and be motivated to try to beat us. At the end of the day, a win's a win."
