Stine Austgulen, Sofie Tryggedsson and Annie Brady each score in double figures for CSU
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Colorado State women's basketball team rallied back from a 13-point deficit and led late in the fourth quarter at UNLV, but was unable to hold off the Lady Rebels and fell, 56-52, on Saturday from the Cox Pavilion.
Â
Colorado State (12-7, 4-4 MW) was led offensively by senior guard Stine Austgulen, who scored 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the floor and 5-for-8 shooting from three-point range. Sophomore guard Sofie Tryggedsson had 14 points (4-for-10 three-point shooting), while junior forward Annie Brady added 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting. For the game, CSU outshot UNLV (10-7, 5-1 MW), 37.3 percent to 30.9 percent, but was outrebounded by the Lady Rebels, 43-28, and had a 17-5 disadvantage in free throws made (five attempts for CSU, 20 attempts for UNLV).
Â
After shooting just 25 percent (3-for-12) in the first quarter, Colorado State was forced to rally from a 20-7 deficit entering the second stanza. UNLV held on to that advantage for much of the second quarter and led by 12 with 3:45 remaining in the first half, but Austgulen erupted for three three-pointers from that point and Tryggedsson added another to cap the half on a 12-0 CSU run and head to halftime tied at 26 apiece.
Â
That deadlock persisted throughout the third quarter and into the fourth quarter, as there were three instances of a tied score in that final period before Tryggedsson put the Rams up, 50-47, with 3:21 to go on her fourth three of the game. However, the Rams turned the ball over on three of their next four possessions and UNLV pulled back ahead, 54-50, on a layup and jumper by Katie Powell and three Lady Rebel free throws. CSU was able to cut the deficit to two on an Austgulen layup with five seconds to go, but CSU was forced to foul and UNLV's Brooke Johnson made both free throws to put the game out of reach.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"I thought we showed a lot of resolve throughout that whole basketball game. They got a couple of different leads on us and we just stayed the course. (We knew) they're going to make some shots. They seem to make them in bunches there in the beginning and to start that third quarter. Anything after that was pretty sporadic. Defensively, again, an outstanding effort.
Â
On specifics that made differences in the game:
"They clocked us on the glass. We knew that was a huge challenge. I thought that was a big stat in the game, and we talked about that beforehand. At the end of the game, in terms of execution…I think we turned it over three out of the last four possessions with our guard play, kids that have the ball in their hands that are supposed to make the right decision. We just didn't execute late-game like we should've."
Â
NOTES
- Saturday's loss snapped a streak of eight consecutive CSU wins against UNLV and 16 straight wins over teams from the state of Nevada.
- Senior forward Veronika Mirkovic finished the game with 11 rebounds, marking a new career high.
