Rams traveling to Grand Junction to compete with BYU and Colorado Mesa
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State swimming and diving team opens its 2018-19 season in Grand Junction at the Intermountain Shootout beginning on Friday (Oct. 5).
The two-day meet features competition against BYU and Colorado Mesa. CSU was victorious over both teams at the same meet last year. The event will utilize dual meet scoring and diving will run concurrently with swimming. Each athlete may score in seven events total; no more than five can be individual. Swimmers can compete in additional exhibition events.
"It gives us an opportunity to get away from campus for a couple days and swim multiple events, including some that we wouldn't normally see in some of our meets," CSU head coach Christopher 'Woody' Woodard explained. "It gives us the best ability to see as many of our kids in as many events as possible and gauge what we've done so far versus what we need to do."
CSU is coming off a triumphant 2017-18 season where the team finished with an 8-3 dual meet record, its best since the 2009-10 season. The squad finished in fifth place at the Mountain West Championships for the second consecutive year and broke a dozen school records.
The Intermountain Shootout is a great way to start the season, according to Woodard. The team can get away from campus without having to travel too far, and this meet can provide a good measuring stick for where the team is currently at after offseason training.
"We have enough teams in the area that we can get to high-quality meets," Woodard said. "We have so many out-of-state kids, and we get to go across the I-70 corridor and they can see this beautiful state that they've come to. I like that opportunity, and it doesn't take up as much travel time. It's a good situation for us."
Four All-MW honorees (Marie Goodwyn, Haley Rowley, Tonicia Thomas and Maddie Ward) return to Colorado State this season, with Rowley named the MW Swimmer of the Year in March 2018.
The Rams also welcome 10 freshman (Halley Buhlig, Kristina Friedrichs, Madison Hunter, Hope Jestes, Katie Leonard, Elsa Litteken, Kate Meunier, Abbey Paige Owenby, Grace Siebmann and Hadley Templin) and two junior transfers (Julia Box from Buffalo and Silvia Guerra from Louisville) to the team.
The meet will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
