CSU tops Colorado Mesa, loses to BYU
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado State swimming & diving team went 1-1 at the Intermountain Shootout, defeating Colorado Mesa and losing to BYU in its first competition of the 2018-19 season.
CSU beat the host squad, Colorado Mesa, 244.50-147.50, but fell to BYU 213.00-180.00.
"We started some sessions strong but we weren't able to maintain momentum throughout," CSU head coach Woody Woodard said. "We had some fantastic individual performances, highlighted by Haley Rowley and Maddie Ward."
Rowley tallied four individual event wins, while Ward swept all three individual breaststroke events.
The Rams opened the meet on Friday night with a win in the 200 medley relay, with Tonicia Thomas, Ward, Jennae Frederick and Veronica Morin finishing in 1:45.80.
Rowley won her first event of the season, narrowly taking victory in the 200 freestyle over Tiara Coker of BYU by just 0.23 seconds.
Ward followed up her medley relay contribution with a win in the 100 breaststroke, finishing nearly a second faster than the competition with a time of 1:05.16.
Rowley had another dominant performance in the 1650 freestyle, winning by over 23 seconds with a time of 17:16.37. Rams true freshman Abbey Owenby took second (17:39.51) in her collegiate debut.
The Rams swept the podium in the 200 butterfly with Rowley leading the charge, finishing in 2:05.81. Frederick (2:07.03) and Marie Goodwyn (2:08.27) took second and third, respectively.
Ward and Louisville-transfer Silvia Guerra provided a glimpse toward what they could be as a breaststroke duo this season with a 1-2 finish in the 50 and 200 breaststroke events.
Rowley notched her fourth victory of the meet with a win in the 200 IM. The Rams again swept the top three positions, with Grace Siebmann and Goodwyn finishing second and third.
Frederick took center stage with a win in the 100 butterfly toward the end of the meet, touching the wall in 57.58.
