Rams battle to scoreless draw with Colorado College on Sunday

Rams’ Peifer makes stop on penalty kick to send match to overtime, then makes pair of saves in second extra-time period

FORT COLLINS, Colo.  – The Colorado State women's soccer team battled the Colorado College Tigers to a scoreless draw in a Mountain West match on Sunday afternoon from CSU Soccer Field.

After holding Air Force without a shot on goal in a shutout on Friday, Colorado State (5-5-4, 2-2-2 MW) held Colorado College (7-4-1, 3-2-1 MW) without a shot on goal until the 59th minute in Sunday's action. CSU had three shots on goal over that span, and had all four of the first half's corners en route to a handful of the opening period's top chances. The top chance of the half generated by CC came in the 40th minute, as a header from Lucia Costanza off a set piece rang off the crossbar and stayed out of the net.

Colorado State controlled much of the possession throughout the early and middle stages on Sunday's match, but CC generated its most dangerous opportunity of the match in the 76th minute. The Tigers carried the ball into the box and played it toward the goal area, eventually earning a penalty kick when a handball was called on a CSU defender. CC's Lauren Milliet, the conference's No. 2 scorer in terms of points per game, sent her penalty kick try to the left, but CSU keeper Hunter Peifer made the stop to keep the match scoreless late. Peifer finished the match with five saves.

The Rams were the beneficiary of a friendly crossbar twice more during Sunday's match, as CC's Johanna Hamblett sent a header off the crossbar in the 89th minute and again in extra time. The Rams tested CC keeper Jade Odom twice in the latter period of extra time, but she turned away both shots on goal from Beth Plentl and Kaija Ornes to keep the match at a scoreless deadlock. Peifer matched Odom with a pair of saves of her own over the final 10 minutes in her sixth clean sheet of the season.

STAT OF THE MATCH
This marks the first time in Colorado State's now-six-season history that the Rams have shut out two conference opponents in the same weekend. CSU shut out Air Force, 1-0, on Friday and had a streak of 148 minutes of game time without a shot on goal against before allowing one to CC's Catie McDonald in the 59th minute on Sunday.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
"I thought we played really well. Obviously, we were fortunate a couple times with them hitting the crossbar, and Hunter (Peifer) came up big for us today. She was ready for that penalty kick. She went the right way and made a great save, as well as another couple of really good ones. We're still just a tick away from springing someone in alone or getting that clear shot, but overall, I thought we played really well."

NOTES
  • With Sunday's result, Colorado State has its second three-match undefeated streak in conference play in its now-six-season history. The Rams defeated Nevada and Utah State and added a draw with Boise State last season in its other similar streak.
  • Junior goalkeeper Hunter Peifer reached 10 solo shutouts for her career and six this season with today's result. Both totals improve upon her own program records.
  • Each of Peifer, Baylee Bedard, Halley Havlicek, Lauren Jones, Caeley Lordemann, Beth Plentl and Lexi Swenson played all 110 minutes on Sunday.
  • Kaija Ornes paced the Rams in both shots (four) and shots on goal (three) on Sunday.
