Rams hold SJSU without shot on goal for first 60 minutes, fall on 84th-minute tally from Spartans’ Darriell Franklin
SAN JOSE, Calif.  – In an otherwise defensive battle, an 84th-minute goal for San Jose State was the difference as the Colorado State women's soccer team fell to the Spartans, 1-0, in a Friday night Mountain West match from the Spartan Soccer Complex.
Neither team registered a shot through the match's first 35 minutes, but the Rams (5-6-4, 2-3-2 MW) put together a couple of solid counterattacks to put the pressure on San Jose State (7-5-2, 6-1-0 MW) early. Among those was a rush led by sophomore forward Taylor Steinke in the 11th minute. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native separated from her defender and forced SJSU keeper Paige Simoneau to meet her at the top of the box to break up the play.
Â
After holding opponents without a shot on goal for nearly 149 consecutive minutes last weekend, Colorado State kept the Spartans without a shot on goal for the first half on Friday. Sophomore forward Ally Murphy-Pauletto generated the first half's only shot on goal in the 35th minute, but her shot to the right side of the net was turned away by SJSU's Simoneau.
Â
That stretch without a shot on goal for SJSU lasted until the Spartans' Natasha Harris was credited with one in the match's 60th minute. That remained the only shot on goal in the second half until the 84th minute, when the Spartans' Darriell Franklin fired home Friday's decisive goal. Jamilecxth Becerra set up the match's game-winning tally, finding Franklin in the middle of the box. Franklin then fired to the bottom-left corner to break the scoreless deadlock.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Colorado State has now held three consecutive opponents without a shot on goal in the first half of each of those respective matches. Friday's 60-minute stretch without a shot on goal for the Spartans was the second longest between the trio of matches. CSU held the first of those opponents, Air Force, without a shot on goal for all 90 minutes of regulation.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
"It was a good game, and we faced a good opponent tonight. It's always tough to lose late like that, so we'll move on from this. There's a lot of fight left in each of these young ladies, so we're looking forward to playing again on Sunday."
