Rams return to Moby Arena for 7 p.m. MT exhibition game against Colorado Christian on Friday
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Junior guard Mollie Mounsey tallied 28 points in her first appearance at Moby Arena to lead the Colorado State women's basketball team to a 77-55 exhibition win over the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology Hardrockers on Thursday night.
Mounsey, who was voted by conference head coaches as the Mountain West Preseason Newcomer of the Year earlier on Thursday, scored her team-high 28 points on 9-for-13 shooting (.692) and 6-for-9 shooting from beyond the three-point arc (.667). The Follett, Texas native helped build the Rams a 17-point halftime lead with perfect 6-for-6 shooting (5-for-5 three-pointers) through the first half of regulation.
Sophomore guard Lore Devos poured in her 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting, and led the Rams in rebounds (seven), assists (five) and steals (three). Senior forward Tatum Neubert also scored in double-digits for the Rams, scoring 11 points on 5-for-5 shooting and added six rebounds with a pair of blocks. For the game, the Rams outshot the Hardrockers, 52.7 percent to 33.9 percent.
After trailing early in the first quarter, the Rams created their initial separation with the final eight points of the opening period and an 18-11 lead heading to the second. The gap widened to 33-17 midway through the second quarter, powered by three Mounsey threes over the second quarter's first five minutes.
The lead fluctuated a few points above and below that 16-point edge through the third quarter, but Neubert and Devos combined to convert on three layup attempts early in the fourth quarter and build the lead to 65-44 with 6:21 to go. The Hardrockers pulled within as close as 15 points, but a pair of baskets by Devos and a layup from sophomore guard Grace Colaivalu over the final minutes pushed the lead back above 20 en route to the final 77-55 result.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"For our first game, we had a fair amount of good things and had some kids have some really nice performances; but, we also made some mistakes and got exposed. As a coach, you're okay with that in a first game because you can go back in the film room and show your kids that these are the mistakes you have to correct. So, I think we can get a lot of good out of tonight, and we had a lot of kids play a lot of minutes. We had some kids that have basically one or two practices under their belt, and we played them a lot tonight, so you could tell they were a little tired. We've got some pieces, but a long way to go."
On Mollie Mounsey:
"Mollie can really shoot it, but she's also just a really good basketball player. She can be a playmaker off of the ball. She's got incredible range, she's a good passer, she's really competitive, and you see that. We played her a lot of minutes tonight, and she was probably our best defender. So she just brings a lot to the floor when she's out there and I think she's going to be out there quite a bit."
On Tatum Neubert:
"Tatum leads our toughness. She's a very good post defender, and just a very good basketball player. She can play on the perimeter as far as her passing, driving and handling the ball, and she's good down there in that low post area. We're only going to see her get better and better, and she's such a positive vibe out there. She's somebody that I think as the season goes on that we can trust. She's just a very steady wind there."
On Lore Devos:
"I think you see a very confident Lore. She's fit, carries herself with a lot more confidence and she plays that way, so she's a very good force defensively. She can guard all five spots. She's really good at getting to the basket and has improved her shooting. She does quite well in practice, and is just a very good player on the floor. She's an important force as we move forward."
