Devos paces Rams to 72-46 season-opening victory over Eastern New Mexico

11/6/2018 10:27:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Rams’ Devos (23 points), Svanholm (14 points) and Mounsey (12 points) score in double-digits in 26-point win over Greyhounds

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Sophomore guard Lore Devos scored 23 points to pace three Rams in double-figure scoring and lead a 72-46 season-opening victory over the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds on Tuesday night from Moby Arena.

Devos tallied her 23 points on 10-for-16 shooting (.625) and added seven rebounds. Fellow sophomore Lena Svanholm corralled as many rebounds and shot 6-for-9 en route to 14 points, each career highs. Junior guard Mollie Mounsey joined the duo in double figures with 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. From the point, sophomore guard Grace Colaivalu registered seven assists against no turnovers and scored six points.

Colorado State (1-0) jumped out to an 11-0 lead, but the lead slowly dwindled down until the Rams trailed by a point at halftime, 27-26. However, CSU came out of the locker room on a 12-point run, powered by eight points from Devos and a couple of points from each of Svanholm and senior forward Tatum Neubert.  Eastern New Mexico converted on a pair of baskets after that run, but a pair of Svanholm free throws accompanied by threes from freshman guard/forward Taylor Mole and Mounsey extended the lead to 46-32 heading to the fourth quarter.

After taking control of the game in the third quarter, CSU pulled away in the fourth quarter, leading by more than 20 for most of the final period. Another three from Mounsey highlighted a 7-0 run to open the fourth quarter, which also gave the Rams a 21-point edge with 8:12 to go. ENMU pulled within 16 points of CSU about midway through the fourth quarter, but Mounsey and freshman guard/forward Lauren Brocke made threes in the final minutes to help the Rams build back up to their final 72-46 advantage.

STAT OF THE GAME
With her 23-point outing, sophomore guard Lore Devos registered her second career performance with 20 points or more. In addition to her Tuesday night total, Devos also tallied a 25-point effort in the Rams' 2017-18 season opener against Idaho.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"We had a pretty good start to the first quarter, but then it went south in a hurry. The second half was obviously much better. Effort plays…I think they (ENMU) probably won that area. On the glass they were just going through us. We have to become a stronger basketball team, a tougher-minded basketball team. Kids had some (quality) individual performances in the second half. Mollie (Mounsey) made some threes, and these two (Lore Devos and Lena Svanholm) did a really nice job scoring. Overall, my standard – and I hope their (the team's) standard – is a little bit different. We should be playing a little tougher, more determined basketball than we did in the first half."

NOTES
  • With her 23-point performance, sophomore guard Lore Devos registered her eighth career game with double-digit points.
  • Before her 14-point effort tonight, sophomore forward Lena Svanholm has registered her previous single-game high in points (eight) against Eastern New Mexico in 2017.
  • Svanholm's previous career best in rebounds (three) was also against ENMU in 2017.
  • Sophomore guard Grace Colaivalu recorded seven assists on Tuesday, a total she has only topped once. Colaivalu racked up eight assists against Colorado on Dec. 6, 2017.
  • Each of freshman guard/forward Taylor Mole, junior guard Mollie Mounsey and senior forward Tatum Neubert made their first appearances for CSU. Mounsey and Neubert each also made their first starts for CSU on Tuesday.
  • Colorado State's all-time record in season openers improves to 28-17.
  • The Rams start with a 1-0 record for the third time in the past four seasons.
  • CSU's all-time record against Eastern New Mexico is now 2-0. The two teams met for the first time last season, when the Rams defeated the Greyhounds, 75-35.
  • CSU moves to 82-19 (.812) in Moby Arena during Williams' tenure.
  • The Rams have won six of their last seven games played at Moby Arena, dating back to last season.
