CSU Finishes FIfth at Saint Mary's Invitational

Rams defeat four Pac-12 and three Mountain West teams in their effort
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – In an event that features 15 teams ranked in the top 100 according to Golfweek, the Colorado State men's golf team shot one of the best final rounds and finished fifth at the 2018 Saint Mary's Invitational, Nov. 5-7. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Saint Mary's College of California, was played at the famed Poppy Hills Golf Club (Par 71 – 6,945 yards) in Pebble Beach, Calif.
Starting on the back nine, CSU made the turn in a combined 5-under among the eventual counters and came home in even-par to post a 5-under 279 and finish at 1-over 853. No. 10 Southern Cal shot a blistering 19-under 265 in the final round to rally for the team title at 21-under 831. BYU slipped to second eight shots back at 13-under 839 followed by Pepperdine in third at 4-under 848. Arizona finished three shots ahead of the Rams in fourth at 2-under 850.
Freshman Oscar Teiffel posted his fourth top-20 finish of the year and second in the lineup, tying for 12th at 2-under 211 following a 1-under 70 in the final round. Freshman Davis Bryant also posted a top-20, tying for 15th at 1-under 212 as he recorded a team tournament-best 3-under 68 in today's action. Junior AJ Ott tied for 30th at 3-ovver 16, with sophomore Jack Ainscough shooting a 1-under 70 in the last 18 to tie for 39th at 5-over 218. Senior Jake Staiano rounded out the scoring in a tie for 56th at 10-over 223.

Stat of the Tournament:
• CSU posted a 5-under 279 in the final round, its best round of the tournament and one of just three under-par rounds on the day.

• Colorado State picked up victories over four teams that were ranked ahead of the Rams in the latest Golfweek rankings – Nevada (#33), UCF (#48), Utah (#53) and Oregon (#57).
• The Rams earned wins over four Pac-12 schools -- 2016 National Champion and 2017 National Runner-Up Oregon, Oregon State, Utah and Washington State.
• CSU took home victories over three Mountain West rivals, defeating San Diego State (six shots), Fresno State (35 shots) and No. 36 Nevada (38 shots)
Next Up:
• Colorado State has completed fall play and will return to the course Tue., Feb. 19 for a dual match with Denver University prior to playing in the Wyoming Desert Classic, Fri.-Sun., Feb. 22-24. Both events will be played at Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
