Rams’ Devos drops 23 points for her third game with 20 or more points this season
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Sophomore guard Lore Devos dropped 23 points to help the Colorado State women's basketball team fend off a second-half rally from Northern Arizona and defeat the Lumberjacks, 65-54, on Wednesday from Moby Arena.
Â
Devos tallied 23 points for the second consecutive game, and went above 20 points in a single game for the third time this season. The Kortrijk, Belgium native shot 11-for-21 from the floor, and led the team in rebounds (eight) and assists (five). Junior guard Mollie Mounsey added 13 points and three rebounds, while senior forward Tatum Neubert scored eight points on 3-for-5 shooting and corralled five boards.
Â
Colorado State (4-3) led for nearly the entirety of Wednesday's contest, trailing only for 1:23 on a made free throw by Northern Arizona (4-3) at the 9:11 mark of the first quarter. A Mounsey layup at the 7:48 mark put CSU up, 2-1, and the Rams never trailed again for the final 37:48.
Â
The initial separation for Colorado State began as early as the first quarter, when the Rams held NAU to 1-for-11 shooting (9.1 percent) and without a field goal over the final 5:16 of the period to take a 15-7 lead. That lead grew to as large as 18 at 27-9 midway through the second quarter, as the Rams' defense allowed only one additional NAU basket over that stretch. However, the Lumberjacks heated up toward the latter end of the first half, outscoring CSU, 14-2, over the final five minutes of the second quarter to cut the Rams' lead down to eight.
Â
The run continued for the Lumberjacks in the early stages of the third quarter, as CSU's lead was cut to just 33-32 at the 6:42 mark. The lead for CSU fluctuated a few points above that in various stages of the third, but NAU cut it to one twice more before a 45-42 Rams lead heading to the fourth. The decisive run for CSU came with less than three minutes to go in the fourth, as a layup from Devos followed by a layup-and-one from Mounsey put the Rams up, 59-51. The CSU defense held NAU to just one more made field goal down the stretch, and paired it with perfect free throw shooting to extend its lead to the final 65-54 result.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"First of all, those students – those fourth- and fifth-grades – were absolutely outstanding. They provided an energetic and fun environment that our kids fed off of. I think we played really well today, and I think that a large part was because of the energy that was in Moby. There's something to be said about people in the seats and an energetic crowd and teams playing better. We surely experience that today. To me, this was one of the best games we played this year. We didn't turn it over much, and our shot selection was really good. The ball had a lot of energy today and we found a lot of different kids (for an open look). Really proud of the effort."
