CSU tops UC Riverside, Youngstown State to improve to 4-3 on the season

LAS VEGAS – The Colorado State tennis squad picked up a pair of victories on Saturday, defeating UC Riverside and Youngstown State in Las Vegas.

The two wins pushed the Rams above .500 (4-3) for the season. CSU has won its last three matches overall, including a win over Eastern Michigan in Lincoln, Neb., last weekend.

CSU opened the day against UC Riverside, and took the first doubles point of the morning. Sophomore Alyssa Grijalva and freshman Priscilla Palermo teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, while junior Emily Kolbow and freshman Emily Luetschwager won 6-1 on court No. 2.

Palermo gave the Rams a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Karla Dulay, but UC Riverside would answer with the next two singles wins to tie the match at 2-2.

Luetschwager regained the lead for CSU with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 over Sara Khattab, but again, UC Riverside responded with another win, pinning the match on the result on court No. 3. Grijalva, who entered the weekend with CSU's best singles record, would come through for the Rams, winning in straight sets over Chloe Pham to secure the 4-3 win for the Rams.

After a lengthy first match of the day, CSU had little time to regroup before playing Youngstown State in the afternoon.

This time, it would be CSU's opponent earning the opening point, with Youngstown State securing the doubles marker with a close 7-6 (2) victory at No. 2. Grijalva and Palermo did pick up a 6-1 victory on court No. 1 for the Rams.

Luetschwager tied the match by clinching the first singles victory of the dual, winning 6-1, 6-3 over Sofia Macias. Grijalva then continued her singles dominance with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Anastasiia Khokhlova, improving her singles record to 6-1 this spring (12-3 overall).

The Penguins reclaimed the lead with consecutive victories at No. 1 and 4, putting them one point away from the match win. CSU sophomore Riley Reeves, who was playing in her first singles match of the year, came up huge in a three-setter on court No. 6, winning 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 over Ana Stroe.

For the second time on the day, CSU would be involved in a match that would go down to the final singles point. It was freshman Emma Corwin's time to shine, walking away victorious over Cassandra Moraleja, 7-6, 6-2, to give the Rams the walk-off win.

IN THEIR WORDS…
"The team is realizing that you don't always need to play great to win; you need to compete great to win. We did a good job of getting two wins today, and we did it in different ways, with and without the doubles point." – CSU head coach Jarod Camerota

NEXT UP…
CSU will face its first Mountain West opponent of the season when it takes on UNLV tomorrow at 10 a.m. MT/9 a.m. PT at the Frank and Vicki Fertitta Tennis Complex. UNLV is 5-3 on the season and also defeated both Youngstown State and UC Riverside on Saturday.
