Weekend includes first MW match of season for Rams

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State Rams tennis squad is heading to Las Vegas this weekend, where they will face UC Riverside, Youngstown State and UNLV. All matches will be hosted by UNLV.

CSU (2-3) will have its first three-match weekend of the spring, and the UNLV is the Rams' first Mountain West opponent of the season.

"They're three very different teams, and they possess different challenges," CSU head coach Jarod Camerota said. "What we learned from last weekend is that we just have to go at all three of them as hard as we can. It's super important that we go at everybody regardless of their ranking or perception. We have to compete and have a good attitude, and we can have a good weekend if we do that."

Sophomore Alyssa Grijalva has paced the Rams in singles play, boasting a 4-1 record this spring (10-3 overall). Junior Emily Kolbow, and freshmen Emily Luetschwager and Priscilla Palermo each own a pair of singles victories.

In doubles, Palermo and Grijalva are 2-2 at the No. 1 position and Luetschwager is 2-2 with sophomore Riley Reeves as her partner at No. 2. Reeves and fresman Emma Corwin combined for a victory in No. 3 doubles against Eastern Michigan last weekend in their first collegiate match as a doubles duo.

The Rams are coming off two consecutive 1-1 weekends, with wins over Milwaukee and Eastern Michigan. This weekend will be CSU's fourth road trip in its last four weekends.

Camerota believes this trio of matches will provide a great opportunity for his team to continue to learn and prepare for the rest of league play later this spring.

"We are playing our first conference match, and UNLV is one of the better teams in the Mountain West," Camerota stated. "It'll be a good measuring stick for us based on the competition level and because it will be all outdoors and windy. It will help get us ready for league play, when we will likely face similar conditions."

CSU plays UC Riverside at 10 a.m. MT on Saturday morning. UC Riverside is 1-4 on the season, with its most recent outing being a 6-1 loss to Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 3.

The Rams will then regroup quickly to play Youngstown State at 3 p.m. MT on Saturday. Youngstown State is 0-5 this season, but did qualify for the NCAA Tournament last season.

UNLV is CSU's final foe of the weekend, with the two MW sides slated to play at 11 a.m. MT on Sunday. The Rebels are 3-3 this season, with wins over New Mexico State, Weber State and Mississippi State. UNLV lost to both Arizona State and Gonzaga in Tempe, Ariz., last weekend.
