Rams drop Wednesday night Mountain West contest at Boise State, 55-49

2/22/2018 12:56:00 AM | Women's Basketball

Rams hold Boise State to 31 percent shooting, but shoot a season-low 29 percent from the floor on Wednesday

BOISE, Idaho – The Colorado State women's basketball team fell to the Boise State Broncos, 55-49, on Wednesday night in a Mountain West matchup at Taco Bell Arena.

Colorado State (18-9, 10-6 MW) held Boise State (20-7, 12-4 MW) to 30.9 percent shooting (17-for-55) from the floor, including just 16.7 percent shooting (2-for-12) in the fourth quarter. However, CSU shot just 29 percent (18-for-62), marking the team's lowest field goal percentage in a single game in 2017-18 and the team's only sub-30 percent shooting performance of the season.

Bright spots on the offensive end for the Rams included performances by senior guard Hannah Tvrdy and junior forward Annie Brady, who tallied double-digit points each. Tvrdy paced the Rams with a team-high 18 points on 7-for-15 shooting and added six rebounds and three assists, while Brady 10 points and corralled six rebounds.

Despite the final shooting performance, CSU held the edge offensively early, jumping out to a 10-3 lead in the contest's first five minutes on baskets by senior guard Stine Austgulen, Brady and Tvrdy. However, the Rams did not make a field goal for the remainder of the opening period and the lead narrowed to 13-11 heading to the second. Boise State tied the game on its first possession of the second quarter, took the lead at the 5:09 mark and went on to hold that lead for good.

CSU trailed 29-22 at halftime, but battled back to cut the lead down to three by the end of the third and to as little as 44-42 with 7:48 remaining in regulation. That lead grew back to 49-42 on two free throws and a three-pointer over the next two minutes, and proved to be enough to hold off any late Ram comeback. That three at the 5:34 mark would be the last field goal made by Boise State on Wednesday, but the Rams missed 10 of their 12 field goal attempts beyond the final media timeout and were unable to mount the needed offense for a comeback.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"Defensively, we're really pleased with how we played. That's what's frustrating. There were so many good things tonight in terms of putting ourselves in a position to win the game. You talk about executing a gameplan defensively…our kids did a pretty darn good job. Now you've got to go make some baskets. We chart how many shots we miss inside the restricted arc, and tonight, we missed 13. That's a three-foot shot. So we missed 13 of those, gave them 16 points off of our silly turnovers and had some crucial misses at the foul line in stretches where we could have really closed the gap or made it a one-point game. That's stuff that we can control."

On the Rams' missed shots on Wednesday:
"It's not like that's world-beater stuff. They're Division I basketball players. We've got to be productive with what we're creating for ourselves. These kids are doing a great job getting to the basket and a great job kicking it to the open three, beautiful passing. Finish the play. Good job making it to the foul line, but make the shot. That's why I feel bad for our team, because they fought like crazy and put themselves in position for a good road win, but the shot-making …we've got to get back to making some baskets."

NOTES
- Colorado State's 29 percent shooting from the floor on Wednesday is a 2017-18 season low. The Rams' previous low was 30.4 percent vs. Oklahoma on Nov. 21.
- Prior to Wednesday night, Colorado State had won its second meeting against Boise State in each of the first five seasons under Ryun Williams.
