Rams take five-of-six singles matches to go 2-0 in opening home weekend
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State tennis squad overcame an early deficit to defeat Presbyterian, 5-2, at the Fort Collins Country Club on Sunday.
CSU (8-4) has won seven of its last eight matches. The last time the Rams went 7-1 over an eight-match stretch was in 2004, when the team had an 8-1 run from Feb. 12-March 24.
Presbyterian (5-6) took the match-opening doubles point, putting the Rams in a 1-0 hole.
Freshman Priscilla Palermo knotted the match back up at 1-1 with the first singles victory of the day, winning 6-2, 6-2 over Brittany Nuttall at No. 1. Fellow freshman Emily Luetschwager followed suit with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Tracy Johnson, and sophomore Alyssa Grijalva battled back to win in three sets on court No. 3.
Emma Corwin, another Rams rookie, and sophomore Riley Reeves also recorded singles victories to seal the win for the Rams.
"We got up in singles and we learned our lesson from doubles," CSU head coach Jarod Camerota said. "We closed it out and didn't take anything for granted or assume someone else was going to get the point. That's a lesson learned in team tennis."
Palermo and Grijalva began the morning with a comprehensive 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles before the Blue Hose came back to win at positions No. 2-3.
Luetschwager and Corwin extended their singles unbeaten streaks to eight and six matches, respectively. Luetschwager has not lost in singles play since the Rams visited Nebraska on Feb. 5.
CSU will idle until visiting San Diego on March 14. The Rams will play UCSD the following day. The Rams return home on March 24, when they host Creighton at the CSU Tennis Complex at 1 p.m. MT.
