CSU to play San Diego on Wednesday, UCSD on Thursday
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State tennis team will look to continue its winning ways as the Rams will head to California for spring break to face San Diego and UCSD this week.
CSU (8-4, 0-1 MW) has not played in over week. Most recently, the Rams defeated Omaha and Presbyterian in Fort Collins on March 3-4.
The Rams are in the midst of one the winningest stretches in program history, having won seven of their last eight contests dating back to Feb. 3. It's the best run for CSU tennis since the team won eight out of nine matches in the spring of 2004.
"We're happy with where we're at, but we need to keep getting better as we play more outdoors and gear up for conference season," CSU head coach Jarod Camerota said. "Overall I am happy with where we're at."
More challenges are ahead for the Rams out west this week. San Diego is 4-6 overall, but have won three of its last five matches including a win over MW foe San Diego State on Feb. 11. UCSD is one of the top Division II programs in the United States, currently sitting 14th in the latest ITA D-II national poll.
"We absolutely have to respect both of the teams we are playing this week," Camerota said. "We shouldn't play scared, but if we don't show up they can both beat us."
Several players have stepped up for the Rams during the past month. Freshmen Emily Luetschwager and Emma Corwin both have lengthy unbeaten streaks in singles play at the moment, while the duo of Alyssa Grijalva and Priscilla Palermo have been strong in doubles with a 7-3 record this semester.
Camerota explained that his team has been able to make strides by not looking too far ahead and staying focused in what they need to do.
"We're definitely making progress," Camerota said. "We're taking the matches in clusters; we're looking at them two-by-two because that's how the schedule sets up."
CSU will face San Diego at 2:30 p.m. MT/1:30 p.m. PT on Wednesday and then visit UCSD on Thursday for a 3 p.m. MT/2 p.m. PT affair.
