5/17/2018 10:51:00 PM | Softball
GREELEY, Colo. – The Colorado State softball team moved further on in the loser bracket of the National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC) with a 3-1 win over Northern Colorado on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Rams extended their winning streak against the Bears to 11-consecutive and moved on to play to get into the region championship game. To do so, CSU had a rematch with South Dakota State and ended its season with a 7-3 loss to the Jackrabbits.
[NORTHERN COLORADO RECAP]
Box Score
Colorado State's offense started things right away as it put runners on first and second with one out early. Corina Gamboa got the Rams on the board during the following at bat with a single to right field to score Amber Nelson who walked earlier. The Rams put runners on the corners with two outs before a double steal worked to perfection and Haley Donaldson stole home to give CSU a 2-0 lead.
The Rams' defense put the Bears down in order in the first inning before adding to their lead in the second. Colorado State again put runners on the corners with one out before Ashley Michelena knocked a single to left field to score Hannah McCorkhill and push the Rams lead to 3-0.
Northern Colorado put five runners on over the next four frames, but all of them were left stranded until the bottom of the sixth. The lone UNC run came on a passed ball with two outs.
In the final inning, the Rams locked down any comeback from the Bears to secure the 3-1 victory.
[SOUTH DAKOTA STATE RECAP]
Box Score
In the second game of the day, the Rams got on the board first in the top of the second after the Rams put runners in scoring position with no outs. Lauren Buchanan pushed both runners across home on a single to left. Hannah McCorkhill followed with a single up the middle to score Buchanan and give CSU a 3-0 lead.
Unfortunately for CSU the Jackrabbits made a pitching change in the top of the second and the Rams went cold, not recording another hit or put a runner on base the rest of the game. South Dakota State broke the shutout with a single through the right side in the bottom of the third to score a runner who doubled to lead off the inning. The Jacks scored again in the bottom of the fourth before irrupting in the fifth with five runs on three hits to take a 7-3 lead – one they would hold the rest of the game.
QUOTES
Head Coach Jen Fisher on the senior class…
"They are a really special group of ladies because you rarely have teams that are this unselfish and are okay with their roles. This team was really like that. It was hard to see us have a little slide towards the end of the conference season because they did work really hard every day and were a supportive team. We are going to miss them a lot, but they know that the freshman class is really strong and we have a really good group of juniors that are going to lead us next season. I'm really proud of our seniors and what they did in the classroom and how they built the culture of this team."
Head Coach Fisher on the season and making the postseason…
I think we really needed to end the season on a high note, so the win today against UNC and scoring early against South Dakota State helped us to play better. I'm really glad we had the opportunity to go out on a high note and to play in the NISC. I'm happy we were able to stay in Colorado and play close to Fort Collins because I thought there was some really good energy here. This is only the second year of the NISC, but we are hearing a lot from recruits and I think it is something that can project us forward as a program."
