8/25/2018 2:26:00 PM | Volleyball

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State volleyball team recorded its first win of the season, with a sweep over UNC Wilmington on Saturday morning in Moby Arena.

In the opening set, both teams were tied at 4-4 before the Rams went on a 12-4 run to lead 18-8. The Seahawks got within eight points at 19-11, but CSU finished the frame off, 25-18.

Colorado State cruised out to a 9-3 advantage in the second set and held the lead through the heart of the frame, which included an 8-3 run late, on its way to holding a 2-0 match lead.

In the final set, both teams battled as the Rams led 13-12, before CSU rattled off three-consecutive points to force at UNCW timeout at 16-12. Following the short break, Colorado State's offense continued to run on all cylinders as it recorded its first sweep of the season.

QUOTES
Head Coach Tom Hilbert on the match…
"I thought our team came out and made serves today. I think we served reasonably tough as well, which was good and it helped us on the point scoring side. We also blocked some balls in little spurts, which allowed us to have 11 blocks. We played well in moments which allowed us to get comfortable leads and that was very good. I thought we handled UNCW pretty well and we played good on defense; we probably could get better, but overall it was a good match."

Sasha Colombo on the stepping into a key offensive role…
"I felt like I had to do my job as a right side and Katie (Oleksak) set more balls to me today than last night so I felt more comfortable. I felt like I got my kills today, which was good."

Kirstie Hillyer on blocking…
"We definitely put an emphasis on getting our blocks set up against UNCW. Heading into the match we were ready to face them and we knew they hit lower than normal.

STAT OF THE DAY
Paulina Hougaard-Jensen paced the Rams with 10 kills, while hitting .467 – tied with freshman Sasha Colombo.
