Rams fall to Northern Iowa, 1-0, on late goal

Rams outshoot Panthers 16-6, but surrender game-winning goal in 87th minute

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women's soccer team held Northern Iowa without a shot for the first 41 minutes of the second half, but the Panthers' lone second-half strike in the 87th minute found the back of the net in a 1-0 heartbreaker on Sunday from CSU Soccer Field.

Colorado State (1-1-2) registered nine shots in the second half to outshoot Northern Iowa (1-0-2) by eight over Sunday's final 45 minutes. CSU held the advantage in possession over the span of that second half, and had its three best chances over a 10-minute period beginning at the 61st minute. The first and last of those, at the 61st and 70th minutes, respectively, were chances fired just high of the net. Sophomore forward Ally Murphy-Pauletto took the first of those shots on a breakaway, while junior midfielder Caeley Lordemann had the latter one-on-one opportunity from within the penalty area.

The most promising of the Rams' opportunities came in the 64th minute, when corner kick service from senior defender Beth Plentl found the head of junior defender Halley Havlicek. The Spring Grove, Ill., native redirected the ball toward the right side of the net, but UNI keeper Jami Reichenberger had good position on the right side to make the most important of her six stops. After weathering those opportunities, UNI made its only second-half shot count when Sophia Conant found the ball in a penalty-area scramble and scored on a shot to the right side of the net.

For the match, the Rams outshot the Panthers, 16-6. Other opportunities for the Rams included a 33rd-minute free kick that Lordemann fired just over the top-right corner of the net, as well as a 40th-minute try from senior forward Hannah Gerdin that also missed high over the top-right corner.

STAT OF THE MATCH
The Colorado State women's soccer team held Northern Iowa to six shots for the match, the second-fewest the Rams have allowed an opponent in a single match in program history. CSU set that record on Sept. 6, 2013, when the Rams held Grand Canyon to five shots.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
"This game can be tough sometimes. It's a shame. We fought, but they fought, too. They played at Wyoming on Friday, so we thought we could use that to our advantage. but obviously we couldn't crack them. We certainly had our chances, and both keepers were fantastic today. We'll get right back after it in the next couple of weeks. We've experienced a lot of emotions over these four games. We don't play this coming week, so we have a lot of time to reflect."

NOTES
  • Colorado State's 10-shot advantage is its largest in a single match in nearly a year. The Rams outshot New Mexico State, 22-11, en route to a 5-1 win on Sept. 1, 2017.
  • Along with their shots advantage, the Rams also led in shots on goal (6-4) and in corners (4-2). The Rams were not called offsides on Sunday, while the Panthers were twice.
  • Junior midfielder Alex Lanning and sophomore forward Ally Murphy-Pauletto tied for the team shots lead on Sunday with three apiece.
  • Senior forward Hannah Gerdin paced the Rams in shots on goal with two against the Panthers.
  • Six players saw the field for all 90 minutes on Sunday, including junior defender Halley Havlicek, sophomore defender Lauren Jones, junior midfielder Caeley Lordemann, redshirt junior goalkeeper Hunter Peifer, senior defender Beth Plentl and senior defender Lexi Swenson.
