Eagles tally go-ahead goal in 22nd minute before tacking on empty-net goal in 86th minute
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Eastern Washington's 22nd-minute goal proved to be enough as the Colorado State soccer team fell to the Eagles on Friday afternoon from CSU Soccer Field.
Â
Eastern Washington (3-2-1) got a second goal from Brooke Dunbar in the 86th minute, but it was fired into an empty net after Colorado State (1-2-2) had elected to substitute its goalkeeper in favor of an extra attacker over the final 6:39. The Rams were able to shoot twice with the extra attacker on the field, but were unable to find the equalizing goals in the waning minutes.
Â
EWU's go-ahead goal came off the foot of Brittany Delridge in traffic in the penalty area. Delridge was the beneficiary of a shot from the Eagles' Emma Vanderhyden, who fired from within the penalty area and forced CSU's Gabi McDonald to dive to her right to make the save. The rebound from that diving effort squirted out to Delridge, who took advantage of McDonald's positioning after the stop and fired high to account for the eventual game-winning tally.
Â
Colorado State outshot Eastern Washington 10-5 in the first half, and finished with a 14-13 shots advantage for the match. However, a pair of chances for the Rams in the second half were perhaps the most promising. Senior forward Hannah Gerdin tested EWU keeper Kelsee Winston on a right-to-left shot in the 60th minute, while junior forward Caeley Lordemann was stopped on a diving save nine minutes later off a free kick from just outside of the penalty area.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
"I thought we played really well for most of the game, but just couldn't find a goal. We gave up a corner kick, but didn't defend it all the way through, and it bounced the right way for them and goes in. We played about as well as we could, with the only thing we wanted different being to score those goals that we need. We figured we'd take a chance (on using an extra attacker and having an empty net), and we did get some pressure on them. We'll train tomorrow and try to play our best again on Sunday."
Â
NOTES
The Colorado State women's soccer team returns to CSU Soccer Field on Sunday for a match against the Grand Canyon Lopes (1-5-0). Kickoff is scheduled for Noon MT.
