Rams triumph over Portland State in second sweep of Colorado Classic

9/15/2018 2:06:00 PM | Volleyball

BOULDER, Colo. The Colorado State volleyball team picked up its second sweep of weekend against Portland State on Saturday afternoon in the CU Events Center. Breana Runnels was the lead target for the Rams, recording 17 kills and hitting at a .306 clip.

The Rams got off to a bit of a slow start in the first set as the Vikings jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but Colorado State fought back to tie the game 6-6. The score remained close throughout the heart of the frame but CSU widened their lead to 22-15 with a service ace from Paulina Hougaard-Jensen. The Rams finished strong from there, closing out the set 25-17.

The second set was a battle from the beginning with 14 tie scores, and neither team led by more than five points the whole set. Colorado State had set point at 24-23, but Portland State took the rally to tie the frame 24-all. After a 26-26 tie score the Rams regained their composure and finished the set with a Vikings attack error and a block assist from Ellie Gubser and Paulina Hougaard-Jensen.

In the final frame, the Rams defense caught rhythm with their offense and cruised to earn the sweep. CSU held Portland state to a .000 mark while the Rams offense hit at a .481 clip.

QUOTES
Head Coach Tom Hilbert's on overcoming the Rams slow start …
"The first five points, we were just not playing very well, and then we got better. Blocking is always important and it was really important as we made that run in the first set. In the second set, we made a lot of silly, unforced errors that kept Portland State in that set. And all of a sudden, it's 22-22, and now they're playing well and we had to play well, and we did. So, really, that little stretch at the end of set two was pretty good."
