BOULDER, Colo. – The Colorado State volleyball team battled the University of Colorado to four sets, before falling 3-1 on Saturday night in the CU Event Center. The Rams had balanced offense, with three players reaching double-figure kills, but the Buffaloes held the attack to a .185 mark.
The opening set was an all-out brawl where there were 14 tie scores and seven lead changes. Neither team led by more than four points all set. The two teams were neck and neck though the heart of the frame eventually tying it up at 14-all. The teams continued to battle over the lead eventually tying it at 24-24, but CU went on a 4-2 run to steal the set 28-26.
Set two was more of the same, as again, neither team led by more than three points. The struggle for the lead continued throughout the set as there were 15 tie scores and five lead changes. Both teams traded points down the stretch as the match was knotted 24-all before Colorado capitalized on a kill to secure a 2-0 match lead.
Colorado State's offense seemed to find its rhythm early in the third set as it broke out a 7-2 run to force a CU timeout. CSU kept the lead throughout the heart of the frame driving to a 17-9 score. Colorado looked to challenge the lead as they went on a 7-2 run to make the score 19-16. But the Rams forced a fourth frame as a kill from freshman Sasha Columbo gave them the set win, 25-19.
In the final set, Colorado jumped out early and built to a 19-8 lead, but CSU rallied and went on a 13-3 run to make the score 22-21. But Colorado's offense picked it up at the end, and they snagged three of the last four points to take the set and match, 25-22.
QUOTES
Head Coach Tom Hilbert on tonight's tough loss…
"We needed to take care of the end-game scenarios in sets one and two because we're ahead with the opportunity to win and we didn't do it. That ends up beating us. They are a more physical team than we are and so it wore us down after a while."
STAT OF THE DAY
Breana Runnels paced the Rams with 18 kills. She also recorded 10 digs and two stuffs in the five-set match.
NOTES
-Paulina Hougaard-Jensen led at the net with three blocks and nine kills
