Rams block their way to victory in San Diego

9/27/2018 11:29:00 PM | Volleyball

SAN DIEGO – The Colorado State volleyball team stayed perfect in Mountain West Conference action with a 3-1 victory over San Diego State on Thursday night in the Peterson Gym.

In the opening frame, Colorado State led by a point at 13-12 before San Diego State put together a huge 10-1 run to lead 22-14. The Rams looked to comeback, finishing the match with a 5-2 run, but was too-little too-late as the Aztecs took the first set, 25-20.

The Rams took a 9-4 lead in the second set before both teams traded points though the heart of the frame. CSU strung together six points to lead 20-11, but SDSU responded with a 7-1 run itself to be within three points at 21-18. Colorado State reached set point at 24-18 before a kill by Hillyer tied the match at one apiece.

CSU again took an early lead in the third frame, cruising out to a 7-2 advantage. The Aztecs again built a six-point run to take the lead 8-7. The match was tied 8-all before SDSU took the lead and held it though the majority of the set. Colorado State tied the frame at 21-21 before taking a 2-1 set lead in the match, winning five of the last eight points.

In the final tally, the Rams took an early lead and held it, building a five-point led at 14-9 to force the Aztecs to take a timeout. SDSU look to force a fifth set as it manufactured a 10-2 run to lead 19-16. After a CSU timeout, the Rams finished the match with a 9-3 run to stay perfect in conference.

QUOTES
Head Coach Tom Hilbert on the match…
"We missed too many serves and that kept them in the match because when we were getting them in, we were running points. We need to be better in the serving and passing game if we want to win against good teams. Our blocking was good, but it broke down in the fourth set a little bit. But, for the most part we were very good at blocking tonight. I felt like we hit with a great deal of maturity considering what was going on. We didn't have very many mistakes and limited our errors. Breana Runnels had a great match and Kirstie Hillyer was unstoppable when we got her the right set. I think Katie Oleksak distributed the ball well tonight too.

STAT OF THE DAY
The Rams recorded a season-high 18 blocks in the win, led by Paulina Hougaard-Jensen and Kirstie Hillyer who each tallied eight stuffs.
