9/29/2018 6:07:00 PM | Volleyball

FRESNO, Calif. – The Colorado State volleyball team suffered its first loss in Mountain West action of the season, 3-1 at Fresno State Saturday afternoon in the Save Mart Center.

Fresno State took an early lead in the first set and built a 15-8 lead at the media timeout. The Bulldogs continue to roll through the set and increased their lead to 21-12 to force Colorado State to take a timeout. FS finished the frame 25-17 to take a 1-0 match lead.

Colorado State's offense looked to even the match as it cruised out to a 5-1 lead in the second to force Fresno State to use a timeout. The Bulldogs tied the set at 10-all and took a brief lead at 11-10, but the Rams went on a 6-0 run to regain the advantage and increased it to six at 17-12 before leading 20-13 late. Fresno State tried to charge back, getting back to within three at 24-21 before a kill by Sasha Colombo gave CSU the set and evened the match at 1-1. The Rams hit .355 in the set, compared to .000 in the first; they also had four blocks in the frame.

The Bulldogs took an early lead in the third frame and held on to it, not allowing the Rams to get within more than three the whole set. Fresno State posted an impressive sideout mark at 73 percent. The Rams never scored more than two points back-to-back during the set.

In the fourth, both teams traded points to start before Colorado State scored four-consecutive to lead 11-7 and force Fresno State to call a timeout. The Bulldogs tied the match at 14-all after putting together a four-point run and took a 20-18 lead late. Following a Colorado State timeout, the Rams strung together three points themselves to have Fresno State use its final timeout at 21-20. The Rams led at 23-22, but the Bulldogs finished the set and match on a 4-1 run to hand CSU its first Mountain West loss of the season.

QUOTES
Head Coach Tom Hilbert on the match…
"We started the match very poor in the serving game. We missed a lot of serves and we got better at that during the course of the match, but we never serve-receive very well. We became very predictable. I thought Sasha Colombo came off the bench did a nice job. I also thought Paulina Hougaard-Jensen played solid and Kirstie Hillyer had a good match, but Fresno State a great defense plan and that was one of the big differences in the match. We were not able to stop Fresno State's right-side attack; that is something we should be able to do."

STAT OF THE DAY
Breana Runnels recorded her fifth double-double of the season with a team-high 18 kills and 15 digs.
