Rams drop Border War in Laramie

10/2/2018 10:24:00 PM | Volleyball

LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Colorado State volleyball team finished arguably its hardest stretch of the 2018 season with a loss at Wyoming on Tuesday. The match capped a three-match six-day road trip.

Colorado State started the match taking a 12-9 lead, but the Cowgirls manufactured a five-point run to take a 14-12 advantage – one they wouldn't lose. The Rams tied the frame at 15-15 and at 17-17, but another Wyoming run increased its lead to 23-18 before taking the first set. Wyoming's defense held a 68 percent sideout mark as the Rams started the match with three-consecutive points and then was held to less than two the rest of the frame.

Both teams traded points to start the second frame as it was tied at 10-10. The Rams took a 15-12 lead at the media timeout before increasing their lead to 21-16 on their way to tying the match at one set apiece.

Wyoming used a five-point run early in the third set to grab an early lead and cruised to a 25-14 set win. The Rams were held to a .029 hitting mark as they recorded just nine kills in the set.

The Rams dug themselves a hole in the fourth frame as the Cowgirls took a 5-0 lead and extended it to 8-2 early. The Rams came back to get within two at 15-13 to force Wyoming to use a timeout. The Cowgirls came out of the break with three-consecutive points, all from the service line. The Rams tried to come back again, getting the score within four at 22-18, but Wyoming finished the match with three-straight CSU attack errors.

QUOTES
Head Coach Tom Hilbert on the match…
"We were really high in hitting errors tonight and Wyoming's blocking contributed to that. We just don't have a lot of weapons right now. Tonight we had Paulina Hougaard-Jensen and people are figuring out how to stop Kirstie Hillyer and starting to figure out Breana Runnels. We need to start passing the ball better because that will open things up for other people. We had a couple of moments tonight that we were playing okay, but then we gave up too many point runs. Wyoming is very good and tonight they were significantly better than us. We need to go back, prepare and win some more conference games and then beat Wyoming when they come to Fort Collins."

STAT OF THE DAY
Katie Oleksak earned her fourth double-double of the season with 46 assists and 12 digs.
