Luetschwager, Cliffe win singles flights, Cliffe & Kolbow combine for doubles victory
BOULDER, Colo. -- The Colorado State tennis team wrapped up play at the Colorado Invite on Sunday, with several players achieving significant success in the second weekend of the season.
Sophomore Emily Luetschwager and junior Stella Cliffe each won their singles flights, while Cliffe combined with senior Emily Kolbow to take a doubles flight.
"I'm really proud of how our team competed this weekend," CSU head coach Jarod Camerota said. "Overall it was a very good tourney for us. We improved from last weekend and we will continue to get better."
Luetschwager picked up straight-set victories over Allison Stewart (Abilene Christian) and Solymar Colling (San Diego) to set up a final match against Melissa Pick of Wisconsin. Luetschwager took that match in straight sets too, 6-3, 6-1, to win the Ralphie singles draw.
Cliffe, who is in her first season as a Ram after transferring in the offseason from Eastern Illinois, also took three singles wins this weekend. Cliffe topped Madeline Doherty (Northern Colorado) and Jordan Henry (Abilene Christian) to set up a finals matchup against Ileana Mocciola of ACU. Cliffe topped Mocciola, 6-2, 6-3, to take the flight.
Cliffe and Kolwbow went the distance in the B draw of doubles action. They started off with a 6-4 win over Mocciola and Jordan Henry of ACU in the first round then defeated Sophia Chow and Kati Kukaras of USD in the second round, 6-4. The Rams duo then topped Pick and Christina Zordani of Wisconsin in the finals, 7-5.
Sophomore Emma Corwin advanced to the finals in her singles flight, but fell to USD's Chow, 6-1, 6-4. Corwin picked up a revenge victory over Brigitte Beck of Colorado, however. The pair played in the deciding singles match of the two team's dual match last spring, with Beck taking the three-set victory and winning the match for the Buffaloes. Corwin was the victor today, however, dominating Beck by a score of 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals.
