Rams pick up doubles point and four straight-set victories in singles to earn the win

MADISON, Wis.—The Colorado State women's tennis team opened its spring season with a win against UIC, 5-2, on Saturday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis.

The Rams picked up the doubles point by earning hard-fought victories in two of the three matches. Senior Emily Kolbow and junior Stella Cliffe got the victory at No. 2, 6-3, before UIC came back with a 7-5 victory at No. 1 to even it up at one win each. CSU battled in the final set, as sophomore Emily Luetschwager and junior Nancy Ghanem got the tiebreaker victory at No. 3, winning 7-6.

In singles competition, CSU posted four straight-set wins, while the two losses went to three sets each. The Rams clinched the dual win by picking up quick victories at No. 1, 2 and 6. Junior Alyssa Grijalva won against UIC's Karyna Bihel at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Her teammate Luetschwager finished soon after at No. 1, defeating Lejla Colic, 6-1, 6-3. Junior Riley Reeves sealed the team victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Rachel Le Comber. Junior Stella Cliffe notched a victory at No. 3 over Lucie Prochazkova, 7-6, 6-3. Sophomore Priscilla Palermo and Ghanem each dropped their grueling three-set matches, with both played with an abbreviated third set due to the match having been decided.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Jarod Camerota
"Getting the doubles point was long and intense. Then it was great to get four straight set wins in singles. They were straight sets but tough and close. More than anything, I am happy that we competed hard in all nine matches today. That is what we strive for. We are excited to play Wisconsin tomorrow and hope we have another great crowd. Thanks to everyone who came out today!"
