Rams paced offensively by Mollie Mounsey’s 18 points
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Colorado State women's basketball team fell to the New Mexico Lobos, 70-58, in a Saturday afternoon Mountain West contest from The Pit at Dreamstyle Arena.
Â
Junior guard Mollie Mounsey led all scorers with 18 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the floor and 4-for-7 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. Sophomore guard Lore Devos scored 10 points and led the Rams with seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Grace Colaivalu scored nine points and tallied a game-high eight assists.
Â
Colorado State (7-8, 1-3 MW) kept the game close early behind sharp defensive work, trailing only 14-10 heading to the second quarter despite converting on only one of its last 13 field goals attempted in the first. New Mexico (13-2, 3-1 MW) extended its lead to 20-13 within the first few minutes of the second, but a three-point play followed by a three-point field goal from Mounsey powered a 10-2 CSU run and gave the Rams a 23-22 lead at the second quarter's midpoint.
Â
The key stretch of Saturday's game came directly after that CSU run, as the Rams were unable to stop a 14-3 Lobo run and trailed 36-26 at the half. While the Rams cut the deficit to as low as seven in the third quarter and eight in the fourth, UNM sustained the double-digit lead it built for nearly the rest of the way before the final 70-58 tally.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"New Mexico is extremely talented and extremely athletic, but in the area of fighting harder and competing better, we did that. There's a mental side to that as well. We still had 17 turnovers, and there wasn't a lot of pressure to be honest with you. There's plays to be made out there. The areas that we could control for the most part – effort, attitude – it was pretty solid all game. I'm proud of the kids for that. We just have to make plays to win in The Pit and we didn't do it."
Â
NOTES
The Colorado State women's basketball team returns home to host Utah State in the Rams' Moby March for Cancer Awareness game on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT. The Rams' game against the Aggies will be this season's Pink Out game, and fans are encouraged to attend wearing pink.
