Rams fall to Utah State, 72-53, in Pink Out game on Saturday

1/19/2019 5:37:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Rams paced offensively by a season-high 20 points from Grace Colaivalu

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women's basketball team fell to the Utah State Aggies, 72-53, in the Rams' annual Pink Out game on Saturday afternoon from Moby Arena.

Colorado State (7-9, 1-4 MW) was led offensively by sophomore guard Grace Colaivalu, who led all scorers with a season-high 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting and tallied team highs with six assists and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Lena Svanholm scored seven points on 3-for-5 shooting, while senior guard Myanne Hamm scored six.

CSU held the lead for stretches in the first quarter, and never trailed Utah State (9-7, 4-1 MW) by more than six over Saturday's opening 10 minutes. The Rams cut the lead down to 24-19 with 5:35 left in the first half, but the Aggies converted on a trio of three-point attempts to take a 33-19 lead less than one minute later. The Aggies went on to shoot 59.4 percent from the floor and 53.3 percent from three-point range in the second quarter, outscoring the Rams, 28-12, in Saturday's decisive period.

CSU outscored Utah State, 30-27, in the second half, and were only outscored by the Aggies, 44-41, when excluding the second quarter. The Rams outshot the Aggies, 40 to 38.5 percent, in the second half, but were outrebounded, 23-12, leading to nine USU second-chance points. Colaivalu led the Rams in that second half, scoring 14 of her 20 points on 5-for-7 shooting over that stretch. However, the Rams were never able to gain enough of an advantage to cut the deficit below 20 points until the final 72-53 result.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"You can tell that group (Utah State) is playing with a lot of confidence right now. They came out from the get-go and just kind of dictated how that baby was going to go. Second quarter got away from us. Second half, we competed better, did some good things, made some changes and kids battled. Offensively, we've got a myriad of issues right now. Tough to win when we don't shoot the ball very well and play the way we're playing."

NOTES
  • Grace Colaivalu is the second player to lead the Rams in each of points, rebounds and assists in a single game this season. Lore Devos has done so twice this season (vs. Northern Arizona, Denver).
  • Prior to Saturday, Colaivalu's season high in points was 17 vs. Denver on Dec. 21. The Rams' game against the Aggies marks her second double-digit scoring game this season.
  • This marks the first time that Colaivalu has led the team in scoring this season, as well as the second time she has led the team in rebounds and 10th time she has paced the team in assists this year.
UP NEXT
