FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Remaining unbeaten at home, the Colorado State women's soccer team held strong to win 2-1 in a chippy game against San Jose State Sunday at the CSU Soccer Field.
The win marks the Rams' second three-game win streak this season and improves their overall record to 9-4-1. Within the Mountain West Conference, Colorado State moves to 4-2 and are tied in second with New Mexico and San Diego State.
Colorado State held the advantage in shots (11), shots on target (5), corners (5), and possession (56%), but the game was often back-and-forth with a total of 31 fouls called. Both keepers logged three saves apiece. For CSU's Gabi McDonald, she now has 74 saves on the season.
Both wins this weekend represented the program's first against Fresno State and San Jose State.
Goals
14' Taylor Steinke (CSU) – (Assist: Caeley Lordemann)
For the second game in a row, the Rams got on the scoreboard quick and again the assist came from senior forward Caeley Lordemann. The feed to junior forward Taylor Steinke brought the Spartan goal keeper out of the box, but Steinke maneuvered around a diving Ariana Romero with the ball and used her left foot to find the empty net.
26' Caeley Lordemann (CSU) – (Assist: Ally Murphy-Pauletto)
Colorado State got its insurance goal and eventual game-winning goal from Lordemann – her seventh total and fifth game-winner of the season. This time junior forward Ally Murphy-Pauletto set up Lordemann who shot it just outside of the 18-yard box.
56' Kristen Amarikwa (SJSU) – (Assist: Sabrina Weinman)
The Spartans scored 11 minutes into the second half from senior Kristen Amarikwa. It marked Ararikwa's first goal of the season, while the assist came from SJSU's top-point scorer, Sabrina Weinman.
What They Said
Junior Forward Taylor Steinke
On the crowd…
"The fans mean so much. It means so much to have their support and feel their energy. It could be hard to keep the undefeated title at home without them."
On losing Kristen Noonan to injury…
"Her injury was really unfortunate, but our team has to work together, work around it and find a way to come back and continue to win games, score goals. Our team has a lot of depth so we are able to do that."
Head coach Bill Hempen
On the game and team's success…
"This is a long time coming. We gave up a goal, but we were so good defensively in the middle. Lauren [Jones] is doing great, Kendra [Gipson] is doing great, Emma [Shinsky] has done great when in. We are pretty solid defensively. If you can do that and have a Caeley [Lordemann] that can assist and goal – that's a pretty good recipe for succeeding. We are in a good spot right now."
