Rams Keep Rolling at Home, Defeat Aggies 1-0

Colorado State Improves to 10-4-1

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – On the pitch, they were quite defensive. About their record, Colorado State's women's soccer team is anything but.

After another defensive battle for the Rams on Friday at CSU Field, they were able to hold on for a 1-0 victory against Utah State and keep their undefeated home streak alive as they improved their best record in program history to 10-4-1 (4-2 in Mountain West).

The wind played a big factor throughout the entire game, but early in the first half senior Caeley Lordemann was able to get the connection with sophomore Gracie Armstrong going as she scored her eighth goal on the season with 33 minutes remaining in the first half.

"We were able to get our attack going from the start, and this really helped us get an edge," Lordemann said. "Gracie and I were able to get our connection going early on, and as roommates, we've grown and learned a lot about this game together. We know exactly what each other is going to do in certain situations, so when we saw our chance to strike I was able to capitalize off of her."

As Lordemann continues to add to her single-season records at CSU, Armstrong is rewriting the record book in a different way and in less than one season of playing with the Rams.

Armstrong's assist against the Aggies has put her at six this season as she's now tied the program record for career assists just after breaking CSU's single season record with five.

"I see myself as a player who likes to feed other players rather than take the ball myself," Armstrong said. "My role on this team is as a passer and to assist others, so I'm glad to be a part of this team and just be able to help create the success that we've been having."

As the Rams entered the second half they knew the Aggies would attack heavily and it would require a defensive stand. Coach Bill Hempen had to make certain adjustments in order to keep his players fresh and maintain pressure on the ball.

"We had to battle today and the wind played a factor, but what I'm most proud about is how this team showed grit the whole way through the end," Hempen said. "We made some adjustments and had to put a variety of different players in just to keep pressure on them, and it helped disrupt a lot of their passes this game."

Looking ahead, the Rams will close out their four-game home stretch on Sunday at noon against Boise State for their annual Pink Out for Breast Cancer Awareness. They'll be seeking their first win in program history against the Broncos in a No. 1 versus No. 2 conference-game matchup.

"Finally we can get to this game," Hempen said. "Our goal this season was to take each game one at a time and look at the single task at hand. As a staff and upfront, I think we've really improved and kept ourselves prepared for what's to come next; and now it's time to focus on Boise."
