FORT COLLINS, Colo. – After a 10-day holiday break, Colorado State will return to the hardwood Wednesday at 7 p.m. CT for a New Year's Day matchup against Nevada inside Moby Arena.
The Rams (6-7, 0-2 MW) wrapped up non-conference play with a 6-5 record and head into the new calendar year with 16 conference games on the slate after playing two in the first week of December.
Nevada (7-5, 0-1 MW) will be coming off a three-day break since they defeated Cal Poly, 71-40, on Dec. 28 at home. The Wolf Pack were pinned to finish ninth in the MW after finishing eighth last season.
Coach's Corner
Head Coach Ryun Williams
On the break and starting a new year…
"I love the spirit of the team right now. I can see it in the practices. They came back with a positive want-to-get-better mentality and that is what a coach wants to see. Every game is different and equally important, but now we are strictly in conference season. Our kids are ready for this second half and are wanting to get better with each game."
On Nevada…
"Nevada will pose a lot of problems for us as they have good inside play. Also, on the outside, [Essence] Booker is a tremendous guard. They are a good basketball team. We will have to play a disciplined, tough-minded game defensively. We'll have to perform offensively as well, so we are excited for the challenge."
Off The Tip
• Last time out, the Rams lost at Tulsa, 61-55, ending an up-and-down first half of the season. It marked the sixth game that CSU has lost by 10 points or less. In her first game back after missing four contests, redshirt-sophomore Tori Williams scored a team-high 15 points, including an acrobatic layup just inside two minutes remaining to bring the Rams within three points. However, CSU went 0-for-5 shooting down the stretch and the Golden Hurricane sealed the game with two baskets a few free throws.
• Rams are getting it done defensively. Seven times this season CSU, the MW second-best scoring defense (60.0 ppg), has held an opponent to less than 60 points. Four times this season the Rams have kept its counterpart below 50 points - a feat not replicated in the conference. Eleven times this season, CSU held its opponent to under 10 points in a quarter including four times it has been under five points.
• Absent for the Rams in the first two MW games that will be present to start the new year are Tori Williams and Myanne Hamm. Since returning for the Tennessee game, Hamm has averaged 9.3 points per game in just 12.7 minutes per game across three games. In Williams' first game back at Tulsa, she added five assists and shot 5 of 6 at the free-throw line to go with her team-best 15 points.
• Ball control continues to thrive for the Rams. CSU has had less turnovers than its opponent in all but two games (UIW, BSU), ranking first in the Mountain West in turnovers per game (11.4), which checks in fifth nationally. The turnover margin (+4.92) is fourth in the MW and 39th in the NCAA. In all but three games (SDSU, BSU, TUL), the Rams have scored more points off of the turnovers than its counterpart.
• Brady Cleaning the Glass. Redshirt-senior forward Andrea Brady has pulled in a team-high 110 rebounds, which ranks tied for second in the Mountain West and 41st in the NCAA. Average-wise that pans out to 8.5 a game for third in the conference and 96th nationally. She has three double-digit board games with a high of 15 and has had at least six in every game except
against Tennessee when she had an outlier of four boards. For the season, she is on pace for 254.5 rebounds which would put her seventh on CSU's all-time single-season record list for boards.
Scouting the Nevada Wolf Pack
• Scoring-wise, Imani Lacy (12.0 ppg) and Essence Booker (11.9 ppg) reside just inside the top-20 in the MW, while Nia Alexander (6.75 rpg), the reigning MW Player of the Week, ranks seventh in rebounding. Lacy, a 6-foot forward, leads the conference in blocks per game at 1.73.
• Last time out, Nevada breezed past Cal Poly in a 31-point victory, holding the visitors to just 23 percent from the floor and 16.7 percent from 3-point land. Junior Nia Alexander posted her first career double-double in the win, scoring a team-high 14 points and grabbing a team-best 10 rebounds
• Nevada resides in the middle of the Mountain West with a scoring offense and scoring defense that both check-in at fifth.
• The Wolf Pack were one of two teams (UNLV) that played just one December conference game. Nevada lost 68-61 to Air Force at home despite leading for over 32 minutes as the Falcons took the advantage on an 11-0 fourth-quarter run.
What to Watch for?
• Nevada 3FG% Defense (3rd in MW) vs. Colorado State's 3FG% (5th in MW)
• Nevada FG% (4th in MW) vs. Colorado State's FG% Defense (1st in MW)
• Nevada Offensive Rebounding % (1st in MW) vs. Colorado State's Defensive Rebounding % (1st in MW)
A Colorado State Win on Wednesday Would Mean…
• Ryun Williams remains undefeated in games to start the calendar year at Colorado State, improving to 8-0.
• CSU notches its first MW victory since Feb. 2, 2019 when the Rams defeated Air Force in Fort Collins.
• The Rams end a 12-game Mountain West losing streak, which is the longest since the Rams went 0-18 in conference games from the end of 2006-07 season thru the 2007-08 season (excluding tournament contests).
