Rams suffer cold streak in final minutes, fall at Nevada, 68-57

2/7/2019 12:29:00 AM | Women's Basketball

Rams’ Tatum Neubert scores 18 points with eight rebounds, Mollie Mounsey tallies 17 points

RENO, Nev. – The Colorado State women's basketball team was unable to overcome a cold streak on offense in the final minutes of its Wednesday night contest at Nevada, as the Rams fell to the Wolf Pack, 68-57, from the Lawlor Events Center.

Senior forward Tatum Neubert led Colorado State (8-13, 2-8 MW) with 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting (2-for-2 on three-point field goal attempts) and corralled eight rebounds. Junior guard Mollie Mounsey scored 17 points on 6-for-14 shooting. Nevada (8-13, 4-6 MW) was led by Terae Briggs, who scored 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting and added eight boards.

Colorado State outshot Nevada for the majority of Wednesday's contest, holding a 57 to 43 percent shooting advantage at halftime as well as a 46 to 43 percent edge after 30 minutes despite a cold-shooting third quarter. The early shooting success boosted the Rams over those hard-fought first three quarters, which featured 12 lead changes over that stretch. Neither team gained more than few points' separation for the first three quarters, including just a one-point edge for Nevada heading to the fourth.

The Rams were ultimately unable to sustain their success shooting the ball, going 5-for-15 (33 percent) from the floor without a free throw attempt in the fourth quarter. Of those five Ram field goals in the final period, only two came over the final six minutes of regulation. Nevada countered with 60 percent (6-for-10) shooting in the fourth, and took the lead for good at 57-55 with 4:19 to go. After gaining the game's final lead, the Wolf Pack outscored the Rams, 11-2, to seal the final 68-57 result.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"We played some really good basketball tonight. Kids really fought and battled and put themselves in a position to get a good road win, but you've got to make some plays. It comes down to making some plays down the stretch, and a couple of costly turnovers and missed assignments defensively…boom, seven-point lead (for Nevada in the fourth quarter). That's hard for our group to overcome. Proud of the fight, but that's not good enough. We need more. We need production from everybody and we can't have a player or two have a tough night. We're not that type of team. We'll just get back on the horse, get ready for a big Border War game on Saturday and hopefully play well for 40 minutes."

NOTES
  • This marks the second game this season in which senior forward Tatum Neubert has led the team in scoring.
  • Neubert has now led the Rams in rebounding in five games this season.
  • Neubert has scored 10 points or more in each of her last four outings.
  • Junior guard Mollie Mounsey has scored in double digits in 11 games this season.
