Rams led offensively by senior guard Myanne Hamm (14 points) and senior forward Tatum Neubert (13 points)
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women's basketball team fell to the New Mexico Lobos, 79-56, in the Rams' Senior Day game on Saturday afternoon at Moby Arena.
Â
Colorado State (8-19, 2-14 MW) senior guard Myanne Hamm led the team in both points and rebounds, tallying 14 and six, respectively. Senior forward Tatum Neubert posted a 13-point effort, going 5-for-8 from the floor and 2-for-3 from three-point range. Jaisa Nunn led New Mexico (23-4, 13-3 MW) with 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting.
Â
Colorado State fell behind, 12-2, to open the first quarter but played improved offense for the rest of the first half, shooting 43 percent. Following that 12-2 start, four different Rams combined to knock down the team's next six shots and cut the deficit to 16-15 with 2:15 on the clock in the opening period. However, New Mexico used a superior first-half shooting performance to reestablish a double-digit lead, converting at a rate of 53 percent to take a 33-22 lead at the second quarter's six-minute mark. That lead grew to 15 at 46-31 at halftime.
Â
CSU rebounded to hold New Mexico to just 13-percent shooting from the floor in the third quarter and cut the Lobo's lead to 53-44 with 1:06 left in that period. However, UNM went 8-for-12 (67 percent) from the floor in the fourth, extending its advantage beyond 20 points with 4:15 to play. The Lobos held that advantage the rest of the way before the final 79-56 result.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
On guarding Jaisa Nunn, New Mexico:
"Well, 17 [points from Jaisa Nunn] is pretty good. That's pretty good point production in my book, but she's the best player in the league. She's just got a very skilled game, a very physical game, and she's very intelligent. She's got hands like Tim Duncan, I mean she's so good. So, we battled there, I thought we fought like crazy on her. Tatum (Neubert) really, really made it tough on Nunn to score … You have to leave other kids to guard her, and other kids stepped up and made some plays there in that fourth to get the separation, but she's the best player in the league. She makes him the best team in the league in my book."
Â
On Tatum Neubert:
"She's just been a very pleasant, vibrant personality in our locker room. She's been a very hard worker and a determined player on the basketball floor, and let's face it, she's been probably our most productive kid in the conference season. So she's meant a lot, and she remains positive. I'm proud of her and I'm just glad she's here. She had a rough four years prior to this. Now she's playing a lot of minutes and making the most of it. So proud of Tatum and she's just a wonderful young lady, no doubt about it. "
Â
On Roichelle Marble:
"You never got to see Rochelle play, but Rochelle is a wonderful leader and would have ran our basketball team a lot differently than we're running it now, I will tell you that. She's a very fiery, intense player, but she's kept a positive attitude and done a great job with her voice (in the locker room)."
