CSU prepped for Mountain West Outdoor Championships

Colorado State's track & field teams head to Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, Calif., for the 2019 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Fresno State May 8-11.

The four-day event starts Wednesday with the first half of the decathlon and heptathlon competitions, which will conclude on Thursday. On that day, the men's and women's finals for the 10,000 meters will be held.

Friday features the finals for eight field events, as well as the men's and women's steeplechase. Qualifying for the majority of running events take place during the day. Saturday will be loaded with the finals of 20 events on the track and eight more field events.

Colorado State's women last won the conference title in 2016; the lone men's title came in 2015, when the Rams swept both crowns. Overall, the women have claimed three Mountain West team championships.

Shadae Lawrence Looking For More

While this may be her first campaign in a Colorado State uniform, Shadae Lawrence is no stranger to postseason success. She enters her senior year as the defending NCAA Champion in the discus throw, which she won while competing at Kansas State. She was the national runner-up in the event as a sophomore and is a three-time All-American in the event.

She holds the CSU record with a throw of 209-7 – the top throw in the nation this season – set on April 20. The native of St. Catherine, Jamaica was her country's 2018 national champion.

There are 12 Colorado State athletes who have posted results ranking them in the top 50 nationally in their event this season. Lawrence leads the list with her No. 1 throw in the discus, while Bedard sits 10^th in the hammer.

Rams have claimed Nine Outdoor MW Athlete of the Week Awards in 2019

Week of April 22-28: Nathan Gish – The senior from Fort Collins ran a 21.14 in the 200 meters at the Jack Christiansen Invitational, ranking seventh all time at CSU and topping the MW in the outdoor season. He posted a 10.59 in the 100, (15^th at CSU) and was the third leg on the Rams' 4x100 relay, with the quad setting a season-best at 40.79
Week of April 22-28: Jackson Morris – In the Jack Christiansen Invitational, threw the javelin a school-record 225'-4.00", topping the previous school standard by nearly two feet (223-11). The throw is the best in the conference this season and ranks 27^th nationally.
Week of April 22-28: Jessica Ozoude – She ran a time of 23.10 in the 200-meters at the Jack Christiansen Invitational hosted by Colorado State to set the all-time CSU outdoor record. The time is the best in the conference and sits 30^th nationally in the NCAA.
Week of April 15-21: Shadae Lawrence -- Senior Shadae Lawrence was named the Mountain West Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season following her double record-breaking performance. She broke CSU's outdoor discus record twice in one day, at two different meets. Lawrence's toss of 209-7 (63.89m) at the Mt. SAC Relays Saturday exceeded her initial record-breaking toss of 202-9 (61.80m) at the Beach Invitational earlier that morning. It was not only the CSU and MW record, but No. 6 mark all-time by a U.S. collegian and the Jamaican national record for the native of St. Catherine, Jamaica, and Hydel High School, by way of Kansas State.
Week of April 15-21: Cole Rockhold -- Senior Cole Rockhold was named the Mountain West Men's Track Athlete of the Week after his record-breaking 5,000 meters. Rockhold showed he's back from previous injury setbacks to break the CSU school record in the 5,000 with a time of 13:35.26 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif. The time was No. 1 in the MW this season and No. 7 in the NCAA for the Independence, Mo., native from Truman High School. The All-American also holds CSU's No. 3 mark in the 1,500 from 2017 (3:41.04).
Week of April 8-14: Marybeth Sant – Redshirt senior Marybeth Sant was named the Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week following her performances in her individual 100 meter event as well as the 4x100 relay event. Sant won the 100 meters with a personal best time of 11.56, which claims the third-fastest time in Colorado State history. Sant's altitude-adjusted time of 11.59 ranks fourth in the Mountain West this season. She also ran the first leg of the women's 4x100 relay, a performance that broke the school record with a winning time of 44.06. That mark ranks No. 1 in the Mountain West this season and 18^th in the NCAA. This is the first Mountain West weekly award for the Parker, Colo., native from Valor Christian High School.
Week of April 8-14: Adam Dawson – Redshirt freshman Adam Dawson was named the Mountain West Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week following his winning performance in the men's discus competition at the Doug Max Invitational. His personal best mark of 183-6 (55.93m) ranked 11^th on CSU's all-time outdoor list, and No. 1 in the Mountain West and No. 28 in the NCAA for 2019 at the time of the event. The award marks the second weekly conference honor of Dawson's career, and second in the last three weeks. The Parker, Colo. native from Lutheran High School also earned an indoor weekly honor earlier in 2019.
Week of March 25-31: Adam Dawson -- Redshirt-freshman Adam Dawson was named the Mountain West Men's Field Athlete of the Week following his performance at the Tom Benich Invite March 31 at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. It was Dawson's first outdoor weekly conference honor and his second overall (one indoor). He won the men's discus with a mark of 178-1 (54.29m), which is a personal best and the No. 13 mark on CSU's all-time outdoor list. With his effort, the Parker, Colo., native ranked 41st in the NCAA in the men's discus, No. 26 on the NCAA West list and tops in the Mountain West at the time of his performance.
Week of March 18-24: Shadae Lawrence -- Following her CSU debut at the Fum McGraw Open March 22-23, senior Shadae Lawrence was named the Mountain West Women's Field Athlete of the Week. She won the discus with a mark of 186-3 (56.78m) at that meet. The senior's performance ranked fourth in the NCAA and was tops in the Mountain West by 16 feet at the time of that meet. Historically speaking, Lawrence's debut ranks fifth on each of the Mountain West's all-time outdoor list and Colorado State's all-time outdoor list.)

Seven All-Americans Highlight Rams' Returners for Outdoor Season
Entering this outdoor season, seven members of the current Colorado State track & field roster had earned All-America recognition of various levels of distinction.

As recently as this indoor season, Colorado State had three second-team All-Americans, including Kelcey Bedard (weight throw), Marybeth Sant (60 meters) and Tarynn Sieg (shot put).

Rams Swept MW Indoor Championships in February; 22 Rams Named All-Mountain West
For the second time in the past three seasons, the Colorado State track & field team swept the women's and men's titles at the Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships held at the Albuquerque Convention Center Feb. 21-23.

Colorado State's women scored 139 points, defeating second-place UNLV by 35 points. The Rams' men scored 151 points to top runner-up Air Force by 15 points. This marks the fourth Mountain West indoor title for the Rams on the women's side, as well as their third indoor crown on the men's side. In addition to combining with the men's team on their two recent sweeps, the Rams' women have also won three of the past four MW indoor titles.

A total of 22 Rams were recognized with All-Mountain West distinction for their performances. Of that group, 12 were from the women's team and 10 were from the men's team. Among those athletes was sophomore Isa Bynum, who was honored for runner-up finishes in two individual events, the long jump and triple jump.

Four Rams were recognized for relay performances along with individual efforts, including freshman Lauren Gale (400 meters champion, 4x400 relay), freshman Michael Mooney (mile, distance medley relay), sophomore Jessica Ozoude (200 meters champion, 4x400 relay) and senior Cole Rockhold (mile champion, distance medley relay).

The Rams were also represented in the conference's superlative awards, as head coach Brian Bedard earned each of the Mountain West's Women's and Men's Coach of the Year honors for the indoor season. Between indoor and outdoor track & field, Bedard has now been selected as the conference's coach of the year seven times in his career.

Rams Finish with Most MW Indoor Athletes of the Week, Bedard Honored Twice
A Mountain West Women's Field Athlete of the Week selection for Colorado State senior Kelcey Bedard on Tuesday, Feb. 12 proved significant among conference honors during the 2018-19 indoor season.

That marked the second weekly conference accolade for Bedard this indoor season. The Fort Collins, Colo., native has now earned weekly conference recognition three times in indoor track & field and five times overall in her career. Bedard was one of four athletes in the Mountain West to receive a weekly conference accolade multiple times this indoor season (Wyoming's Ja'la Henderson, New Mexico's Weini Kelati, UNLV's Destiny Smith-Barnett).

Furthermore, the Rams' seven total weekly conference selections and six athletes recognized during the indoor season were each the most of any Mountain West track & field program. No other program had more than five of either. The other Rams to receive weekly conference recognition during the indoor season were freshman Adam Dawson, freshman Michael Mooney, senior Hunter Powell, senior Marybeth Sant and senior Ronald Sayles.
