Half of field comprised of Mountain West teams
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Rams will stick close to home to open the 2019-20 women's tennis season, heading to the Air Force Academy on Thursday for the first day of play in the second annual ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains at the Air Force Outdoor Intercollegiate Tennis Courts.
The eight-team event runs through Sunday, with play beginning at 9 a.m. each day. Half of the field is made up of Mountain West teams, with New Mexico and Wyoming joining the Rams and the hosts. Montana State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado and Southern Utah are the other participating teams.
Coach Jarod Camerota's lone goal for the tournament is to get his players on the court in a competitive situation, understanding the Rams have not had a lot of practice time.
"We're looking for everybody to have good attitude, compete and get a little better," he said. "It gives you a good look at some conference teams and regional teams. The fall season is different than the spring, so there's going to be a different feel."
The Rams are coming off an 11-10 season a year ago and return the bulk of their lineup, starting with Stella Cliffe, who won 22 matches in singles play. Emily Luetschwager went 17-12 in singles (10-9 at the top spot), and Priscilla Palermo was 18-12.
