FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Shaking off a close loss, Colorado State will travel to play New Mexico Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. MT inside Dreamstyle Arena - The Pit.
Within the Mountain West, the Rams (8-8, 2-3 MW) stand in seventh place, while the Lobos (10-8, 1-4 MW) reside in ninth after obtaining their first conference win at Air Force on Saturday. NM holds a three-game winning streak in the series and are 25-13 when playing in The Pit.
For the second time in a week, the matchup features a battle of strengths with the Lobos' offense, third-best in the MW (77.7 ppg), against the Rams' second-best scoring defense (59.8 ppg) in the conference. Last game, CSU held San Jose State, the MW top scoring offense, to its lowest point total in conference and second-lowest overall output in the season.
Coach's Corner
Head Coach Ryun Williams
On moving on to New Mexico…
"You have to put it [San Jose State game] behind you. Defensively, we had the right game plan and we did great on the boards, but we just have to put it all together with the other side of the floor. It is onward to the next game. New Mexico has a talented roster and The Pit is a fun place to play. It certainly has its challenges and I know their fans will be ready for it, but we are excited to go compete."
Off The Tip
• Last time out, the Rams fell 58-53 to San Jose State at home, marking their seventh loss by 10 points of less. After tying the game with 3:10 to play, CSU went 3-of-6 shooting from free throw and missed its last six shots. Defensively, CSU held SJSU, the MW's top scoring offense, to its lowest scoring output of the conference season and second-lowest overall on the season.
• Redshirt-senior Andrea Brady etched her name atop of the CSU single-game record list after pulling in 23 rebounds against the Spartans. It marked the first 20+ board game since Ellen Nystrom did so on 3/10/15.
• Makenzie Ellis continues her offensive onslaught having scored in double digits in seven of the past eight games, including five straight. Since the turn of the calendar, the forward has poured in 61 points in three games. She was named College Sports Madness High-Major Player of the Week for the Mountain West after her 41 points against Nevada and Wyoming.
• Defense continues to be the Rams' specialty. Eight times this season CSU, the MW second-best scoring defense (59.8 ppg), has held an opponent to less than 60 points. Five times this season the Rams have kept its counterpart below 50 points - a feat not replicated in the conference. Eleven times this season, CSU held its opponent to under 10 points in a quarter including four times it has been under five points.
• Ball control continues to thrive for the Rams. CSU has had less turnovers than its opponent in all but two games (UIW, BSU), ranking first in the Mountain West in turnovers per game (11.1), which checks in fourth nationally. The turnover margin (+4.75) is third in the MW and 31st in the NCAA. In all but three games (SDSU, BSU, TUL), the Rams have scored more points off of the turnovers than its counterpart.
• Redshirt-senior forward Andrea Brady has pulled in a team-high 146 rebounds, which ranks third in the Mountain West and 46th in the NCAA. Average-wise that pans out to 9.1 a game for third in the conference and 59th nationally. She has five double-digit board games with a high of 23 and has had at least six in all but two games. For the season, she is on pace for 273.4 rebounds which would put her in CSU's all-time top-10 single-season record list.
What to Watch For? (Stats based on all games)
• New Mexico's Scoring Offense (3rd in MW) vs. Colorado State Scoring Defense (T-2nd in MW)
• New Mexico's FG % (7th in MW) vs. Colorado State FG% Defense (1st in MW)
• New Mexico Steals (2nd in MW) vs. Colorado State Turnover Per Game (1st in MW)
• NM's Jordan Hosey (7th in MW in rebounds) vs. CSU's Andrea Brady (3rd in MW in rebounds)
Scouting New Mexico Lobos
• After starting 6-0, the New Mexico Lobos have gone 4-8 since. However, three of those four wins have come inside The Pit and the Lobos are 6-4 at home overall this season. The Lobos were pinned to finish second in the MW after concluding last season in the same position. Offensively, the Lobos are balanced with three players residing in the MW's top-20 scoring list for the season and the same can be said about the rebounding list.
• Ahlise Hurst's 13.6 points per game checks in 11th on Mountain West's scoring list. Jayla Everett (12.1 ppg) and Jordan Hosey (11.6 ppg) reside in 17th and 19th, respectively. On the boards, Hosey leads NM with 7.6 rebounds per game for seventh in the MW. Shaiquel McGruder (5.3 rpg) and Antonia Anderson (5.2 rpg) are 17th and 20th in the MW, respectively.
• After going 24-7 overall last season that featured a second-place finish in the Mountain West with a 14-4 record, the Lobos return six letterwinners and three starters.
• Attendance in The Pit leads the conference with an average of 2,960 fans per game.
