CSU holds the league leaders in three-point percentage to just 25 percent in earning its fourth consecutive MW victory
USAFA, Colo. – Colorado State used a stoic defense throughout, including holding Air Force scoreless in the final 2:27, to pull away and take a 78-65 road Mountain West victory at Clune Arena Saturday afternoon. With their fourth consecutive win and sixth in the last seven games, all in conference action, the Rams improved 13-7 and 4-3 in the MW while the Falcons dropped to 9-10 and 3-4 in the league.
Only one double-digit lead occurred in the first 37 minutes of the game, lasting less than 30 seconds, as Air Force kept it close after CSU led the majority of the game and took the lead for good with just under 15 minutes to play. CSU led just 52-50 with 9:58 to play, but then redshirt-senior Kris Martin took over the scoring for the Rams, knocking threes on the next three possessions and then a pair of free throws on the fourth to give the visitors a 10-point margin. The Falcons closed it to six with 4:05 to go and had it at a seven-point margin at the final media timeout. However, CSU scored the final six points of the contest to secure the victory.
Colorado State shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the floor and 36.7 percent (11-of-30) from the arc and gave up just six turnovers on the day. Air Force finished at 41.5 percent (22-of-53) on field goals, including the top three-point shooting team in the Mountain West being limited to 25.0 percent (6-of-24) by the Rams' defense. Air Force did win the battle of the boards, 40-30, but only had a 10-9 advantage in second chance points. One key was the 15 Falcon turnovers forced, that CSU converted into a 16-2 margin. CSU also outscored Air Force on the fast break 17-4.
The Rams had five finish in double figures, led by Martin's season-high 19 points. Sophomore Kendle Moore and freshman David Roddy each chipped in 13, while frsdhman Isaiah Stevens add 11. Redshirt-senior Nico Carvacho posted his second straight double-double with 10 points and game-high 13 rebounds. Air Force was led by Lavelle Scottie and Sid Tomes with 16 points each.
