CSU uses a strong interior game to earn their fourth straight home victory

FORT COLLINS, Colo.  – Colorado State used a strong interior presence to earn an 86-68 Mountain West victory over visiting Fresno State Wednesday night in Moby Arena in their home Coaches vs. Cancer game. With their fifth consecutive league win and seventh overall victory in the last eight, the Rams improved to 14-7 overall and 5-3 in the conference, while the Bulldogs fell to 6-13 and 2-6 in the MW.

The game had early runs by both teams, with a tie at 14 and 19 with a pair of lead changes before Fresno State had a three-point lead at 23-20 with 9:10 to go in the first half. However, a quick 6-0 run over 1:12 by CSU on buckets by freshman Isaiah Stevens, senior Hyron Edwards and freshman David Roddy put the Rams up 26-23, a lead they would never relinquish. The margin shrunk to 29-27, but CSU closed the half on a 17-6 run to take a 46-33 lead into the break.

Fresno State hung around and cut the deficit to six at 55-49 with 12:50 to play in the contest, but senior Kris Martin hit a three and Stevens followed up with a three of his own to push it back to a 12-point lead. From there, the Rams were in control the remainder of the way, as the lead was never less than 12 and grew to as many as 20 in the closing minutes.

For the game, the Rams finished at 54.0 percent (34-of-63) from the floor and 50.0 percent (9-of-18) on threes. The Bulldogs were held to just 41.7 percent (25-of-60) on field goals and 34.6 percent (9-of-26) beyond the three-point line. CSU won the battle of the glass 35-32 and committed a season-low four turnovers in the contest.

Roddy was the  leader for the Rams in the game, tallying a team season-high tying 26 points in the game, 18 of them coming in the first half, along with eight rebounds and three assists. Stevens added 21 points, while sophomore Adam Thistlewood chipped in 15. For the Bulldogs, they had three in double figures, led by Nate Grimes with 23.
