Rams Drop Opening Dual to Gonzaga

CSU wins pair of doubles matches
DENVER, Colo. – The first match of the spring dual season stretched out and came down to the wire, with Colorado State dropping a 4-3 neutral-site decision to Gonzaga in Denver.
Alyssa Grijalva was the final player on the court on the afternoon, playing out of the No. 4 singles position. Facing Gonzaga's Vlada Medvedcova, she blazed back with a 6-4 win in the second set to knot up the match, but fell 6-3 in the third.
"I'm proud of the team's fight," CSU coach Jarod Camerota said. "We knew it was going to be a close match. Alyssa fought hard until the end. We had some good doubles wins today, and good wins by Emily Luetschwager and Priscilla Palermo in singles."
The Rams went 2-1 in doubles play on the day as the parings of Stella Cliffe/Luetschwager and Palermo/Grijalva posted victories. Luetschwager won at No. 2 singles, beating Haruna Tsuruta 6-3, 7-5, with Palermo winning at No. 3, 6-3, 6-3 over Kate Ketels.
The singles' win was the tenth on the season for Luetschwager, leading the Rams. The Palermo/Grijavla tandem paces the team with eight victories in doubles.
Colorado State will be back on the court Friday as it faces Colorado in Boulder (2 p.m.). The team plays the first nine duals of the spring season away from Fort Collins, not hosting a match until March 14 against Northern Colorado.
"We're in a good spot," Camerota said. "We need to get some good recovery in, then we get back to work to keep getting better."
